Routers
Routers
Hey all.
So I think we need a new router - the D-Link DI-624 we have is being really crap, resetting itself or dropping connections properly (can't decide which it is - may be resetting and dropping connections because of that). Anyway I can't figure out what's wrong and it seems we aren't the only one to have this kind of problem, though its occurance seems to have coincided with a new computer but I don't see why it should affect things. So we might just get a new router.
So what routers do you use and are they reliable? The router we get must have at least 4 connection ports as well as another to connect to the dsl modem, and have a good wireless signal. Ideally it should have a decent firewall built in too - for stealthing the connection.

Re: Routers
same problem - different manufacturer
I have Linksys G Boost - great speed - especially on wireless - wired 9528kbps wireless 4000kpbs
Have G and B as well (tho not connected anymore) wireless was about 529kbps - crap
Problem is (tho doesn't happen alot) drops connection maybe once every week - tho I could wire things up using 2 routers that will prob resolve this (yes Dog i know u told me to do that) but..........
However do really like Linksys - easy to setup and great speed - thought about the N but little risky
Sry this really didn't help much - if u get a better one tell me

I hate to say it, but I would go for the proper Gaming routers that DLink or LinkSys sell. But they're expensive.
I have had two DLink 624 routers and both of them dropped connections regularly.....really awful even when the wireless network card was a foot away.
Fine if you're running IE or Outlook Express but not for constant gaming throughput.
I had my whole house wireless networked but it started dropping connections after 5 minutes of play. So Preacherman came in and hard wired the whole house for me (thanks mate) and never had a problem since!

Re: Routers
I used a Siemens Speedstream router, but it would degrade over time and would need
rebooting to get the top speed working. I'm currently using a DLink DI-604, as I use
it to network 2 pc's together besides the DSL modem ( 3 meg service), and it has
worked flawlessly.
I'm not into wireless, as it's not as fast and secure (I don't need lectured on wireless
security, thanks) as wired. Besides,I got enuf RF floating around my house as it is.
Cell phones, bluetooth, ham radio, etc.
I am looking at the D-Link DGL-4100 gaming router, (4300 is wireless) seein it offers 4
gigabit ports, and I got two pc's with gigabit NICs.

Re: Routers
I use Linksys, but the last one I bought was a the new version 6. All should be fine, but the ver6 firmware doesn't pass protocol/port GRE 45 for VPN. I cannot connect to work when using the wireless on the router and it is a known issue, which I hope they fix soon. All the other versions work like normal though.

I have a D-Link DGL 4300 gaming router. Has never dropped and is rock steady. Prioritizes gamers on the network and prevents lag from porno dowloading roomies. I think it was like $250usd, so not real cheap, but very good.
