My adventure into 64 bit computing

Post by nesknowitall » Thu May 29, 2008 3:27 pm

So last night my computer got all jacked up after un-installing the RC1 SP1 for Vista. Long story short I have to re-install my OS. I've wanted to try out 64 bit Vista for a long time but I am not sure what to expect. Any advice/tips, or things I should avoid?

Thanks.

64 bit vista isn't really worth it unless you intend on running 4 GB of Ram, or greater. Not everything works with a 64 bit version, so be prepared to look for some alternatives.

I can't think of anything really major that didn't have a 64 bit alternative of the same program, aside from some freeware games. ;)

Well I have 4 GB of ram so thats no problem. I really have only had one issue so far and thats with my linksys adapter but I just had to download a third party driver.

What jedi basically said is the truth.

you dont really want a 64 bit system unless you are running a major server or something.

plus your games wont work. lol.

the big advantage is the amount of ran windows will recognise

I have been running 64 bit vista for the longest time now, I would say 4-6 months and haven't had one issue out of it. So I still fail to see why everyone hates vista so much. I highly recommend it because it offers some very nice features. I can't even think of one program off the top of my head that I can't operate on my computer.

Unlike what the poster said above, all your games work just fine... They will not be 64 bit applications obviously but the 64 bit operating system handles 32 bit programs just fine , just the same as when windows went from 16 bit to 32 bit.

Run windows 98 on a virtual machine if you want to play those classics.

I can run Doom3 just fine on my Vista Home Premium X64. Don't have Quake, haven't tried Doom. Edit: Can't find Fallout and Fallout 2. :(

You can play any 32 bit program or older on vista you just have to change the way it launches maybe , there are plenty of ways for windows to emulate older operating systems.

You can almost always mess around to finds ways to make old software work with the new OS, but the main worry I've heard from the techies is old hardware. Vista 64 drivers just don't exist for a lot of older devices, so unless all your gear is fairly recent and being actively supported by its manafacturer, you might run in to issues.

Actually I'm playing Fallout right now and Fallout 2 works as well. No emulation needed, just run it in compatibilty mode.... just like most other things that don't initially work in Vista!

Alizee is right except lots of others have posted their drivers if the manufacter hasn't produced them yet.

I actually have had NO issues at all with 64 bit. My RAM is actually the same is it was in 32 bit Vista.

So basically those of you here who said the opposite maybe need to try 64 bit Vista

Yeah as someone said above if you have old hardware then yes you will have issues. Other than that you should be able to find drivers fairly easily.
