More TF2 Problems...

Post by abiscuit » Mon May 19, 2008 9:44 pm

The problems just cease to go away.

Since I moved back to Alaska I've been having really bad ping problems. My best guess is it's my ISP, but I've been messing around with some other things. I've tried lowering my rate, but that didn't seem to give me any ping improvement. After messing around with that with no luck, I all of a sudden can't even launch TF2. After the "Preparing to Launch Team Fortress 2" message appears and the game loads, the game immediately exits. I can't even get to the main menu now. I doubt that messing with the rates caused this because I exited a few times while doing this with no problem.

Any ideas? I'm getting really sick of all the grief TF2 is giving me...

Nevermind about the launching the program problem. Putting in -autoconfig then taking it out fixed it. Something was wrong with one of the cfg files or something.

Still doesn't fix my ping problem, but that's looking to be something that I can't fix.

Mine was doing the same thing, try typing -novid in your launch options, worked for me.

what type of internet connection do you have, and what is it's rated speed?

512k/128k - DSL

That's what it is as advertised, but hell if I know if it's the actual speed.

hmm. Id say lower your cmd rate and updaterate a tad, but they are locked at 33 serverside here.

What is your rate at? Iirc 768dsl is supposed to have a rate of around 7500, so maybe yours should be 5000?

I'm not really good at this...

Um this should help a bit. http://youtube.com/watch?v=0RydsC1nl0Y.
It works good but it kinda makes your internet unstable, but if you dont have stuff downloading and multiple programs with internet and playing the game you should have a lower rate. And if you got firefox and you want it faster http://youtube.com/watch?v=eU0b00SVnmI theres a vid to for it, however if you get a update you have to redo it. :? :) Best Lucks

BTW - you can test your bandwidth at:

Lets you know if your ISP is lying to you about your speed :-)

After doing some research, I found that my internet simply fails.

Turns out my ISP has oversold their bandwidth, which means during peak hours I can suffer higher ping for this reason alone for too many users. In addition, because my house here has low bandwidth, if anyone is using the network at the same time as me I get higher ping. Even if they're loading a simple web page.

If everything is optimal I can get at best around 90 ping on TV2 and TV7. Other ville server get 120+, and TV4 gets the worst at about 160+. However, if any of the above things are present it can easily double or triple my ping.

Well that sucks for you, maybe you should look into another provider ( if you got any thing else ), Check everything you can, and look and the videos I gave earlier they might help you slightly.
