need help !!!!

Post by M's » Wed May 07, 2008 2:46 pm

Ok here's the problem about a month ago I had to dump everything from my hard drive due to a virus that was not caught my virus protection.
Now everytime I restart my system I have to choose which OS I want to use. I reinstalled what was on my comp at the time of purchase.
So how do I set it to start with what I want?

I'll assume you are running Windows XP. Click on the start menu and click run. Type 'msconfig' in the run box (don't put any quotes around it). In the System Configuration Utility window that pops up click on the BOOT.INI tab. Click on the line that represents your preferred OS and click the "Set as default" button. Optionally you can set the timeout to a shorter time period (30 seconds is default).

Edited ---- Nevermind what I said ..... dredfox posted within seconds of me, and I never heard of the msconfig command. I guess I've been doing this the hard way the last few years modifing boot.ini by hand.

Describe to me what you mean "Choose which OS to boot". It sounds like you're talking about the windows boot loader controlled by boot.ini.

Generally, being forced to pick an option means the default is set to an invalid choice. Send me your c:\boot.ini and I'll let you know what you need to add / modify.

msconfig is also useful for tweaking what items are automatically run on startup, as well as other things

Yep, my recollection is that msconfig came out with maybe 98? Or was it XP.

Anyway, I was doing it by hand, as well, until just a year or so ago!
