Disc Read Error

Post by Nuckin » Tue Apr 29, 2008 10:40 am

I have a laptop and when I try to boot it up now it goes to a black screen and says “Disc read error” “press Ctrl Alt Del to re-start”. I tried to put the recovery disc in that came with it but nothing happens.. Have any ideas?

ok...

Check your CMOS boot up settings...

make sure you have selected hard drive.

if it has cd-drive as a primary boot drive, make sure you dont have a cd in there, then try to boot.

I hope this has fixed your problem

Also make sure no removable storage is in your computer, CD, Floppy, Zip disk, external HD, flash drive, Etc.

If you checked your boot settings and did wats mentioned above you either have a bad hard drive or a bad motherboard.

BTW any chance this system is a Dell? If so how old?

HD corrupted/failure? Dunno.

When you say nothing happens with recovery CD, it won't boot from it? Or what are you seeing?

likely corrupted sectors in important places on your HDD. Has such family member dropped it recently?

You can purchase a cable to plug the old hard drive into a usb port. This will allow you to recover data from the drive if it is still operational. If it isn't in working shape, you will probably need to purchase a new drive, install it, and restore from the recovery CD. If you need detailed instructions or information on where to buy a hard drive, let me know with a PM and I will post more info here.
