So.... My waterblock cracked :shock:

So.... last night i left my computer on as usual... in the morning it was off. I didn't think anything of it. I turned it on and left for class. It was off again when i returned. So i took my comp out if its hole and turned it on and listened closely and watched to see what happened. I didn't hear my pump goin and shortly after it shut down... so i took everything down, pump out and all to fix it, never a problem its happened before. I realised now that i should never lay my computer on its side like it did yesterday while preparing for a case mod this weekend, its kinda screws up my pump temporarily, nothing i can't fix.

So... gettin to the good part, i didnt realise that my water block was cracked until i had actually oput everything back into place and powered up the machine that i noticed a leak... odd it was at the time and then i saw a crack awwwww $*&%^@&)*&%(&^$)@^(^&%@ says I... yeah i wasnt too happy.



Im just lucky the crack did not go all the way through the plastic/acrylic or whatever top part. atleast not past the o-ring



So after dinner i went to go get some plastic epoxy... took a couple of times to actually seal everything, you can tell my first applications was wimpy compared to the final applications and all.





So yeah.... no to get in touch with Thermaltake to try and get a new part for free....


If this scares anyone to not do liquid cooling... don't let it, this is partially my fault. Though entirely unexpected. The advantage to my waterblock, i can replace broken "parts" (i think) vs having to buy a whole new block.

Holy crap.

Did you have the computer on its side when it was turned on?

When did the block crack? Was it there before? How much was it leaking?

Wow. Times like this I am glad I have a metal top waterblock.

no i didnt have it on its side when it was turned on, that studid. It wasnt a very big leak at all. though i was actually able to find the original point of exit, near the bottom of the block. It was not there before either... im pretty sure it showed up in the last 24 hours if you ask me. Whats funny about it, it wasnt a GIANT leak, but it was defined, i was able to blow air into the system through the hole using dustoff

Conclusion...

Water and electricity dont mix...

simple science.

Unless you want some serious overclocking, I recommend you stick with air...

BTW Mr_s THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION about ""LIQUID"" cooling is that water is not used. I use Ethylene Glycol, a common coolant that you can find is antifreeze. It has a higher heat capacity and does not conduct electricity(I think) . When ever water is actually used for coolants, what i know some people do do is use "distilled" water so its not conductive, and mix it it with ethylene glycol or just any automotive coolant.

Distilled water doesnt conduct electricity, there is nothing dissolved in distilled water so no ions so not transfer of electrons.



Oh and i overclock just because, its a hobby i guess? I enjoy tweakin my computer and fixing/ building, and messing with it

I think you mentiond the anti freeze before in another thread, but fair enough about pushin the limits...

I personally dont have the moneis, and stick with a radeon 9200.
