Well i'm not going to add onto the argument because nobody can "prove" eachother wrong - All we have are witnessed/testimony events with thousands of variables.

So as far as keeping you up to date frag, power supplies today have the exact same interworkings as they used to, they only make them capable of providing more converted power. Also, as far as i've been able to research, NONE of them have any more of a failsafe than another. (I did read an article about a research team devloping a powersupply with a breaker switch that would flip before anything blew)
The more expensive PSU's are usually quieter, have better cooling, modulated cords, and could have more capasitors to control your houses power fluxuations when you turn on other power heavy devices (Eg. Vaccuume cleaner), without sufficiant capasitor storage you could get a reboot when one of those other devices turn on. - You can fix this problem with a UPS

On a side note...BIG screen TV's and projectors have had 1,000+ watt power supplies since before I was born. And alot of them are still alive and kicking!(just checked ebay) Now that they morphed into a PSU shaped box with a few diffrent wire configs it costs nearly $300. You'd think they would come down in price dramaticly It's still the same AC to DC converter it's been for 30+ years I guess thats the price we have to pay for the fabracation. :o

I do know there are UPS'S, Uninterrupted Power Supplies, they will keep the comp running in case of a power outtage so you can turn it off normally. Dunno if that has anything to do with what you were talking about, but yea...

Keep in mind that powersupplies lose efficiency over time (has something to do with their capacitors; im not an electric engineer), so buying one that is more than you need is not a VERY BAD TM idea.

I agree with you MrBlah, I keep seeing talk about the freaking balistix RAM... It's as some one here works for them and is trying to make a sale. We've already discussed memory to the max. - You don't need rip-off ram.
Crucial ram is not a rip off. You pay for the higher quality IC's (which can handle more voltage, which can give a higher overclock), better timings and memory that wont give you a lovely red screen when you run memtest on them.

Crucial isn't the only good memory brand.. Frag could go with Crucial, Corsair, OCZ, Mushkin, Kingston and be confident in his memory.
Power supplies do NOT blow your system when they die. There are failsafe capasitors even in the cheapest of PSU's. The thing that blows first is one of those, it will smoke, smell like burning sylicone, thats about it. You might lose unsaved work once, it's harmless.
Power supplies can damage every piece of hardware in your system when they go. Thats the thing I don't get is why people cheap out on the power supply? Don't you think a nice $100 corsair power supply is worth protecting your investment?

unless he suffers brain damage from something like a computer blowup.. whats he do then?

You have all got some great points, information and ideas here, let’s try and stay focused on Frags build, I know him he needs all the help he can get.

All kidding aside Frag is fairly versed in this stuff he's just been out of the loop for a bit, he will get back into it quickly.

So I'm just asking please don't keep throwing out the I know more then you know stuff. Let’s just put your information out there for Frag and let him decide what he wants to do with it.

This would be appreciated, I would hate to see this get out of hand and have to lock it.
This isn't really getting out of hand IMO. I'm just trying to keep him from taking misinformed advice and ending up risking his investment. It sucks when it happens to anybody.

Easy there KRG! stop flaming, wee are trying to conduct an intellectual conversation here... BTW, newegg.com is the bombz0r for well priced parts. That's where i bought everything for my box as well as DOW's.

Crucial memory is the only brand I use, never had a problem.

ASUS is a good name and not too pricey. i have their mobo.

ANTEC also makes a dependable product, i have Midtower with powersupply.

My only suggestion is to not skimp on your cooling fans, get at least 2 large ones(180mm? 120mm?) to get good circulation.

80mm and 120mm are the two standard sizes JCOM

Size =! efficiency. You look at the CFM, then the size.

But a good rule of thumb is that the larger the diameter, the fewer rpm it needs to push the same amount of air (so larger usually equals quieter).

I was going to emphasize that, but the fact is that size doesn't really equate to the CFM it pushes directly.

Frag, If the fan will be just for your case, get some nice quiet 800rpm 120mm ones.

I got some monster 90CFM fans for my radiator. I kinda regret it because they're loud. But at least I have a fan controller to tone 'er down a bit.

Heck the 2000 rpm 120 I have is pretty darn quiet.
