Mac / IPOD help!

Post by Nuckin » Wed Dec 26, 2007 4:45 pm

Ok my girlfriend has a Mac I book G4 with OS-X 10.3.7. It has 256mg of memory. I bought her the 80GB ipod classic, and upon install it says she needs the OS-X 10.4 or later… To put the OS-X 10.4 it requires 512mb… Anyone know a way to get the ipod installed to itunes without upgrading???

I have not had a mac since my apple IIe.........

:D

Maybe try an older version of itunes? I know you can get older versions of software at filehippo.com but not sure about mac os versions.

with somethin like this... you can be in a sense sol... mac doesnt make things for compatibility in a sense of working with previous OS's, not like Windows which is just updates after updates really. The OS of the iPod is the one thing you will likely not be able to roll back, unlike iTunes which you can just get previous versions of. MacOS has a substantial amount more than just and update what a new OS comes out(10.3 vs 10.4 vs 10.5 ya know). You very well may need to get Tiger if you want this to work. plus, worst case scenario, 256MB of RAM cant be more than $30 im sure.

Your two choices I'd say right now are to get 256MB of RAM for 10.4 Tiger, or get an iPod recovery software and load your 80GB iPod with an older iPod system OS.

I had to install the newer version of itunes.. think it was 7.0. Then it installed an upgrade to the ipod as soon as i opened up itunes. But you could always search for an older itunes version. Not sure it'd work but you can always try you never know.

There's a kludgy workaround that would require finding someone with a Mac running 10.4. Not that appealing:

She probably shouldn't be running OS X with 256MB of RAM... I'd suggest upgrading to 512MB RAM.

That said, if you need a 10.4 Install DVD I could probably arrange something with you, I should have one available.

Thanks all! Yeah she has all of her music already in itunes which she is trying to get on the new ipod.

Gator I let her read the clicky you posted and she laughed and said that is exactly how it went for her.. She downloaded the new itunes and looked at the box.. then decided to install and bam it said to use the newer OS..

I have decided to buy her 512MB of RAM.. possibly 1GB.. Anyone know where to get this cheap? I tried newegg and it looks like 1GB is $100..

Also she wants to know if she upgrades to leopard will this erase all of her music on the lappy in her itunes?

Thanks again

Running the OS Upgrade won't change that type of content. I just did it on my Powerbook last week and it didn't change any of my files.

iBook G4... I'm pretty sure he said it was the Late '04 model. The only spec I can recall is the 256m of RAM.
