I second Dog's suggestion.
and it'll be cheaper too!

1 bat
2 ear plugs so i don't hear the screams
(optional batting gloves)
I know this is going to sound odd, but have you considered talking to your roommate and asking him to limit his bandwidth usage? Im sure whatever he is using can be configured to not hog all the bandwidth.
definitely going to check out the bandwith limiting thing. talking things out is whole different issue/headache.

Pfft... that's if you want to take the easy way out >D
after missing many hours on our ville servers...i would love to have an easy button. :)
Get one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833127158 or one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833127215 and set it up so you have priority and you'll be set.
haha maybe after the holidays and if nothing else helps. *makes bunny ears out of empty pockets*
alot of new routers out now have QoS (quality of service, ie, packet shaping) built-in, where you can essentially tell the router how to prioritize traffic. ie, you could limit your roomate's bandwidth to only be able to pull through like 100KB/s, while you get 100% of available bandwidth. or maybe even limit it to applications, like if his d/l's are bittorrent, then you can set it to limit bittorrent traffic to a specified speed/bandwidth.

heck, which router do you have? it may already be one of them with QoS built-in already :P dlink (and i imagine the other big networking co's), actually have router marketed as a "gaming" router, which i believe just uses QoS for certain types of traffic already setup.

well any case, you will probably want to check more into QoS (quality of service)/packet shaping/etc, because even if you do decide to bump up you service speed, you will have the same problem, because instead of him d/l-ing at 500KB/s (hypothetically speaking) which is you current max speed, then he'll be d/l-ing at 900KB/s and you'll still be trying to vie for your little 30KB/s for when you're gaming... :? :P

and i i 'preview', it looks like Simple posted a push in the router direction :P
that's a great idea...the router is a couple years old but i know it was never advertised as a gaming router. hopefully mine has those options though and i can put the limiter on him.

thanks everyone... as always...

QoS aside, one thing that alot of routers do have nowadays are parental controls, where i think you could limit access during scheduled times on a per machine/mac address basis...such as disallowing internet access from <roommate's mac address> from 6pm to 11pm, or only allowing access to sites like disney.com... :P

what model router is it?

Same problem with my tard roommates. Do you really need 500gigs of pRon. I just wait for them to go to the bar and hit the "pause download" on their computers. "you screwed up my bit torrent!", "yeah, and you're hoggin the intrnet!".

so after all this then going home yesterday to 'attempt' to mess with restrictions and such....we ended up discussing things after all. let's just say there were some heated exchange of words but at least things got out into the open and i should be good to go. time slots is the key...midnight to daytime dl'ing (when neither of us are on our comp) to free bandwidth. if theres a movie or two that's really wanted during the afternoon to evening then permission needs to be granted. :D

...and i still have the 'QoS' stick to wave around.

exactly. and i have no idea why they'd get all upset during a 'pause' because it didn't screw anything up. maybe they missed a user or two to leech from but it's not going anywhere and it's not costing them anything. we the gamers are missing out on the service we pay for by not being able to play at any given time because of selfish and impatient dl'ers.

Make sure the internet is in his name if he is illegally downloading w/o any protections. You dont want the RIAA/MPAA/BSA after you.
