Crap...

Post by Gen.Ben » Sat Nov 03, 2007 10:10 pm

Well.. I was doing some heavy multi tasking when my computer froze up. Being the unpatient person that I am, I decided to unplug my computer instead of waiting for it to free up.

Bad choice. Every time that I tried to boot up, I got the blue screen of lovely death. I tried running last known good configuration, but that did not work. I also tried doing a repair install of windows. That did not work either.

So I ended up downloading the live CD of Knoppix linux that runs straight off your CD-ROM and memory. I am on that now just about to move all my files from one hard drive to another so I can reinstall windows.

I am really liking this distro of linux... I'd greatly consider linux if you could play damn games on it.

I probably wont be back on the servers for a good few days until I can get my computer running and all my games and programs back installed.

So please guys, unplugging/hard powering off your computer should always be the last resort.

Get Ubuntu.
It's awesome, come preloaded with OpenOffice and GIMP and other delights.

sudo apt-get install wine
to install wine!

I built a LAMP server from an old P4 machine with 256Mb RAM and it runs sooo smoothly.
The current IIS server will be slaughtered next week! God, it was such a pain to install MySQL and PHP on the Windoze one.....

I really would like to install linux on my main machine... but the things it lacks makes me sad.

I think I will try out 64-Bit Windows Vista right now.

Well I finally got my computer running. I now have Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit installed.. I'll give vista another shot.. hopefully they have the problems worked out that bothered me when it first released.

Should take me a few days to get all my games and programs installed.. :(

DirectX 10 is the biggest reason.

You have to use emulators and such to run your favorite games and programs.

Do all games and programs work on linux with WINE? Or are there exceptions?

Here is a list of apps that have been tested with Wine. Otherwise it may or may not work.
