Im not a big fan too of SLI/Crossfire!!!
I think, like he said, that it is better to buy a better video card instead of 2 mid-end cards in SLI/Crossfire!!!
What do you have to know is that 2 cards in SLI will NOT give you twice the performance of a single one!!!
In the better case, about 1.5 time!!!!
That is why it is better a single high end card!!!
About the 8600GTS, you have to know that the 8600 series are the low end DX10 card. They have been build to have an affordable DX10 card and their performance are not that good!!!
In my idea, i think youll be better with a better DX9 card than with the low end DX10 8600 series!!!
You can look for a crossfire MB, buy a X1950XT (or X1950pro) and add later another X1950XT if you want and youll still have the option. like you said, to add a second one later. I think that is what i would do i I was you, but I'm not...
