Free Software

Are there any programs that would give off some warning fifteen minutes before the battery dies? Something that let's you customize the amount of power the computer uses would be nice because my hard drive is always going full speed and a whole bunch of excess heat comes from my laptop for no reason no matter what I'm doing and it overheats if I use it for about 1 and a half hours.

lol.
advanced power settings in control panel.
as for the overheating, chances are you have overloaded it with dust and its not getting proper ventilation

Welp, this is a fairly new sidebar gadget for us window users but I thought it is neat to share.

Re: Free Software
Stuff I use that is freeware.
MagicISO
Good alternative to Daemon Tools now that it is bloated down with crapware, yes even the Lite version. I have an MSDN account through school, so most of my Microsoft software is sitting on my hard drive in .iso format. This saves me from having to burn them to DVD.
http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso- ... erview.htm
Infra Recorder
Good open source cd/dvd buring software. My only issue with it is that it does not decode FLAC. I have to use Burrrn if I want to record any of my FLAC files to CD. That's fine though, I rarely do that anyway.
http://infrarecorder.org/
Digsby
Free IM client. Less bulky than Trillian Astra, more aesthetically pleasing (to me at least) than Pidgin.
http://www.digsby.com/
foobar2000
One of the best audio players out there, if you're willing to sit down with it and get it to look like how you want it to look. A daunting task, but thankfully, there are people out there that post skins all the time.
http://foobar2000.org
CCCP
This has already been posted, but I just wanted to reiterate it. CCCP >>>>>> VLC in every respect. It uses the superior Media Player Classic Home Cinema player, and rather than using VLC's internal codecs, it uses FFDShow. While FFDShow isn't as good as CoreAVC for decoding h.264 things, FFDShow is free, and does a really good job. The CCCP includes everything you need to watch just about any video format, sans Quicktime, in MPC HC.

That's about all I an post that hasn't already been posted.

Re: Free Software
This is a great thread, and I just wanted to add that there is a site- http://ninite.com/ which helps quite a bit when you need to do a fresh os install. Most of the stuff on the site is free, and there are also some trials, but what it does is let you select all the things you need, from IM programs, to Acrobat reader, VLC, Anitvirus, etc. Then, it puts it in one single install file that you download and run, so that everything all gets done at once instead of having to get everything separately. The only downside is that it puts everything in the default location, so if you like to install stuff in other places, you may have a problem. Not really a free software itself, but it's very handy. Oh, and it also has steam.
Oh, also, if you tend to have a bunch of stuff pinned to your taskbar, or in separate taskbars, theres ObjectDock: http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/
There's a free version which basically lets you put shortcuts onto it, and put it on the top, bottom, or side of your desktop. It can auto-hide, and do some other things. Windows only though. I find it handy since Win7 doesn't allow you to make other toolbars like XP did, and I like having all my games and stuff on a quick bar instead of the start menu.

Windows 7 actually comes with a very upgraded and impressive Backup utility out of the box. If not, I've heard good things about Cobian Backup.Rigges wrote:How about some thing to back up my Hard drives or files on the hard drive to DVD or CD????

Re: Free Software
Paragon software has a bunch of free tools I recommend for everyone. Easily back up a disk image to CD or anyplace else, fix boot issues, make images of your hard drive, etc etc.

Re: Free Software
Might as well revive this thread
Antivirus:MSE (Mircosoft security essentials)
It works wonders against virus and nasty stuff, also you can change how much of the cpu it uses in the options.

I also suggest installing Malwarebytes because it's awesome against Malware.
