Q.U.B.E.

Post by Masakari » Mon Jan 09, 2012 8:09 am

So, I thought I saw a topic about this already, but I may be either crazy or thinking of another forum (Or both, of course).

Since y'all hate walls of text so much, let me bullet point it:

-Yes, comparisons to Portal are apt. The game copies that atmosphere, appearance, and first-person puzzling. The first two things are almost blatantly copied over, but that's not too bad.
-The puzzling in this game is much better than Portal. You start off with no introduction, and while the first few sectors move very quickly, the elements combine together well to create difficult puzzles around the halfway mark.
-Considering I'm halfway through the game right now and I've only played slightly over an hour, it's probably not a very long game. It's a game worth playing, but I imagine it'd be easier to recommend at around the $10 than the $15 mark.
-It's currently my candidate for GOTY 2012. Ignore the fact this is the only 2012 released game I've played.

If you do have the cash, I do still highly recommend it, especially if you thought the puzzles in Portal 2 were lackluster and want a good fix of FPP.
I am the 1%!

I played the demo, it seems pretty neat, looks to have the makings of an outsstanding physics puzzler, much like Portal.

I'm glad more people are hoping on the FPP bandwagon. No, that's not sarcasm, I will buy this, but I don't think I will have time to play it until summer time.

Having beaten the demo in literally under 3 minutes on my first-ever run (according to Steam's "time played" info for it, anyway), I'm hesitant to plop down $10+ for this one. However, I really like the idea, and intend to pick this game up someday when it goes on sale for ~$5. I like the obviously Aperture Science-inspired aesthetic a lot - this seems like something Aperture might have actually done.

I think that's what I'll do. Seemed pretty cool but the demo alone didn't sell me. Indie games like this tend to go on sale for real cheap on a regular basis so i'll probably wait for that.

So I finished the game the other day, and my summary of "Like Portal, but without the story and with better puzzles" still stands. There's enough creativity in the elements that you're constantly being introduced to new elements throughout the course of the game, and puzzles are challenging enough that you'll have to think about them for a bit, but never hard enough to make you give up and look for a solution online or anything.

Whether you think it's worth $15 depends on how much you like first person puzzle games. If you enjoyed the story of the Portal series more than the puzzles itself, this probably isn't the game for you. If you were a fan of the puzzles but thought they weren't challenging enough, this is the game you want.

Does the game have UDK support? I think this would be an excellent game for modders if it does.
