Problems on initial connection to servers

Post by English Oatcake » Thu Jul 05, 2007 2:16 pm

Not sure what is going on, just wondering if anyone had any ideas

When I first join the server, i'll get to the point of selecting a class, sometimes a little further sometimes not even that far, then ill get the nice little message of "connection problems" for a minute or so then ill either get disconnected or ill disconnect manually. I then wait until the server times me out and kicks my id off then I can rejoin and play with no problems at all (apart from being a bullet magnet and firing plastacine bullets :P)
also i've only encountered it on dod, when i played tfc or cs i didnt have this (fingers crossed it doesnt start happening now)

I have absolutly nothing running that isnt needed, even kill some services before loading dod (nothing critical, just development/testing stuff) so i highly doubt its something like that
i've got ample specs for it so im confident its not lack of resources
and its only started doing it in the last couple of weeks and nothing on my computer has been changed
i dont think its my net connection cos MSP hasnt said he has the same problems
and yes it happens whether or not he is playing when i load the game

Is it only on the DoD Ville server (if so which server) and does this happen when you join other (non Ville) DoD servers.

Sounds like steam is on the fritz...

Im assuming youve tried rebooting?

If youre using a router/cable modem, dont forget to reboot those as well

Talk to your ISP. Maybe the connection from England is messed up.

its an xp pro, and i know its not the connection. ive tried all the obvious like rebooting the lot and even beating them till they surrender and give me free drinks :P

its an "out of the box" dod setup, no modded configs, no custom sprays, no hacks
if i was using hacks then i obviously need to find some new ones cos these dont work :P

i've not noticed it on other servers, gonna have a little try now see what servers it happens on

ok my results for DoD

Connect to ville 3, crashes after approx 20-30 seconds. Game freezes then a few seconds later I got the "WARNING: Connection Problems"

Connect to Jolt.co.uk (1). After 3 mins of play, no problems

Connect to Ville 3, after 20 seconds game freezes, 34 seconds "warning: connection problems"

Connect to "1st Infantry Division", 3 mins of play with no problems

between each server connection, i quit Dod, exited steam waited a few minutes, and then opened steam and loaded dod then looked for the server

Jolt is a UK server and was the control server cos it gives me a ping of around 70 with players when full

1st infantry division I believe is a US server which ruled out the UK-US connection problems, gives a ping similar to ville3 of around 160-170

I'll try CSS with Ville4 and DoDS with ville1 later after i've eaten and see what the result are for that

The Ville 3 and 2 are in the same location
The Ville 1 and 4 are in the same but different location then 1 and 2
The Ville 5 is in a different location then the others as well.

Run a trace route on 3 could be a bad hop to that location.

routed all 5 servers, no bad hops anywhere

did 5 traces on 3, all came back pretty much the same, no bad hops out of the 26 and always with an average of 177ms on the server

interestingly though, comparing the routes between 2 and 3, they take a differnt route at hop 7, one goes north up to the UK core, the other goes south to the core, then rejoin at hop 20/21 respectivly
2 has 25 hops average of 177ms
3 has 26 hops average of 177ms
