Portal 2: Peer Review

Post by Flash » Fri Sep 30, 2011 1:10 pm

Hidden at the bottom of the soundtrack volume 3 blog post was this little gem:
Oh yeah, by the way, before we forget, the first Portal 2 DLC, "Peer Review" will be out next Wednesday. For free.

The DLC is out now. Portal 2 is also 50% off through Thursday at 4PM PDT, so get it if you haven't!

I haven't tried the co-op myself yet, but I hear there are a total of 9 new maps, which is pretty good. The original 5 co-op chapters were 6 to 7 maps long, so this one's around a time and a half one of those based on number of maps.

The SP challenge mode will only last as long as your interest in the challenges does. It's fun to go through and find the shortest/least-portals ways through the levels, but some might not enjoy this as much as others. I personally find it interesting to learn just how many portals my standard solutions for each challenge actually took, and how that stacks up to others' runs. The records for lowest portals on each chapter can also make you search for the methods the best-scoring people used, by essentially suggesting "This chamber is do-able in X portals."

A 9-level new set of co-op levels, with a great story to go with. These levels are acctually very challenging on the first playthrough; Biker and I were stuck on 7 for almost a half hour. Most levels deal with the basics, you'll see gels and lasers on pretty much every stage, one stage even has the Conversion Gel (the "place a portal anywhere" goop). Funnels, bridges, turrets, just about everything.

On top of that, every single player and co-op level also has a "challenge mode", which keeps track of how fast you run the level and how many portals you use. It has a high-score system which is linked with steam statistics (there's a graph), and also keeps track of your friends' scores. Lower times and few portals are the high scores. Unfortunetly, unlike the original, there is no "fewest steps" challenge, but the challenge mode allows for time trial on any and every stage, including the first levels without the portal gun, and even the final confrontation with Wheatly.

This is hard to be cool and suave while being informative at the same time. Goddamn my coolness.
In my experience, common sense isn't too common.
