Re: Anime Recomendations From an Old School Otaku
Just because it's Shoujo/Jousei (for girls, for women) doesn't mean it's not good.
Off the top of my head I can list several Shoujo manga/anime that I've thoroughly enjoyed:
Escaflowne
Angelic Layer (I have the manga)
Ouran High School Host Club
My Heavenly Hockey Club
several (but not all) Clamp works
I find that Shoujo comedy series can be gold, since they don't rely on slapstick or action like the shounen comedies.
Also, Kuragehime isn't strictly speaking Shoujo, or even Jousei. The art style, the characters, and the plotline don't really fit into the stereotypes.

Re: Anime Recomendations From an Old School Otaku
I am currently watching 2 Shojou's. Kimi ni Todoke Season 2 and I am showing a friend Ouran High School Host Club.
A lot of people will deride men for watching said shows, but I really could care less. Genera does not matter to me in the least, what matters to me is if the show is good. Refusing to watch an anime based on genera is like refusing to read Pride and Prejudice because it's a "chick book."
Good entertainment is good entertainment regardless of genera. Limiting yourself to shonen shows will just leave you missing some of the true masterpieces of anime. Shonen is all well and good, I am currently watching quite a few shonen shows. However, MOST of them are somewhat lacking in the character development, to the point where I have no real connection with the characters. You will not find that in most good shojou. In fact the only shows I really get emotional about, right now primarilly ANGER and Kazehaya and Sawako (Kimi ni Todoke), are my shojou shows. I mean hell, at the point I am in Fairy Tail right now, Erza is dying and I could care less because I know for a fact it's shonen and she is going to be saved. In Kimi ni Todoke, I'm actully not sure if the main characters are actually going to get together at this point, and that pisses me off.
Edit: I just realized that similar logic could be applied to one of the most well known anime in America. Why are you watching Dragonball. It's based off of a manga for 8-10 year old boys...

Re: Anime Recomendations From an Old School Otaku
I hardly ever look into an anime I plan on watching. I could care less about the voice actors, the studio, or the directors, yet people seem to really get into that stuff. There's maybe been only 3 animes I've ever stopped watching, and the reason, I think, I hardly ever stop watching any anime is because I have no expectations coming in. I just have a neutral attitude, and it works out well.
The reason I stopped watching Haruhi was because my expectations were set super high because I've heard so much about it, and in the end, I was expecting the greatest anime ever, it wasn't in my opinion.
Some animes I watched when I was younger were so simple, so basic, had so much fan-service, yet I could care less back then. Even now I don't look for much in an anime, sure I expect a little better plot, but not everyone anime ever needs to be *Insert Your Favorite Anime Here*
Long story short, I'm easily amused by anime, and think some people are too picky. >.>

Re: Anime Recomendations From an Old School Otaku
I second that notion. I used the be super obsessed with some animes, but then I thought about it realistically. Now I watch anime like I would any other tv show, for curiosity. Sure I seem a bit more curious about anime than other shows, but that's just how I roll. I usually won't bring up a topic about a certain aspect of one until someone asks me, but otherwise I won't rant or gloat.Bronze Fox wrote:I hardly ever look into an anime I plan on watching. Re: Anime Recomendations From an Old School Otaku
Generally speaking, I'll download and watch the first ep of any show that might be good each season.
Don't matter if it's shounen, shoujo, sports, comedy, or w/e.
Suggestion for the current season: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Mahou Shoujo, dark and depressing, good art styles, love the music (especially ED)

Re: Anime Recomendations From an Old School Otaku
Let's see... I am currently watching Gosick and Fractale which are both airing in Japan right now. (Just an added bonus)
Watching Gundam Seed with my brother when we have the time which is almost never.
And watching a little InuYasha when I'm bored for fun.
I'll have to look into that anime Medic Army. Watching anime that is currently airing is always boring. >.>

You and me both. I definitely enjoy that they changed it up for the movies, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bothered watching them.frostdillicus wrote:One of my favorites. Re: Anime Recomendations From an Old School Otaku
Finished House of the Five Leaves last Sunday;
It was a pretty good slow anime, not a lot of action yet still enjoyable surprisingly.
Last episode of Fractale aired yesterday, and I watched it last night.
The ending was pretty disappointing. It's a watch-two-times anime, where nothing will make sense the first time through.
Still watching Gosick, and now I picked up Romeo x Juliet.
I was thinking about Eden of the East next, for those who've seen it, any good?

Eden of the East is a pretty unique show. I am still waiting for someone decent to release subs of the two movies as frankly, the story is totally incomplete without watching them. It's a good show though, if you are fond of not knowing what the hell is going on for most of a show.

Re: Anime Recomendations From an Old School Otaku
Two quick questions for all you anime-philes:
1) I have really enjoyed Gun Sword, Cowboy Beebop and Full Metal Alchemist (the original series). Anything that anyone can recommend from what I have enjoyed previously? There seem like a lot of good suggestions on the previous pages, but there is so much I don't know where to start!
2) For anyone with access to Netflix watch instantly, any picks from what they are currently streaming?
And to Crimson, your collection is impressive!
