Yesterday iOwn and I did a 2v2 on practice mode... I wouldn't suggest doing practice mode even if you have any rts experience at all. The main reason is that it is played at a lower speed and when you graduate to the normal league you are going to be overwhelmed by how much faster it is. Practice league is soooo slow. I'd suggest doing the challenges and try to get at least bronze/silver on all of them. Or do the coop vs the comp stuff to learn basics in a no pressure environment.

As Big Biker said, teamliquid.net is a great Starcraft community. Heck, it's probably the best one out there. It is heavily moderated and it's a great source for information. Be warned though, it is very unville like. Many of the people there are very elitist and are competition oriented. Many of them have man crushes on Korean pro gamers, mostly Reach the Man Toss.

Another great source of information is the Day9 Daily. He puts on a show most weeknights and it is very entertaining and pretty informative. I credit it with my being able to get to platinum in the beta without playing broodwar for at least 7 years. Here's his blip account's archives, I'll try to find some good episodes to link later. http://day9tv.blip.tv/posts?view=archive&nsfw=dc

And here's his streaming channel http://www.ustream.tv/day9tv Shows are mostly around 7 pm PST Monday-Thursday
Dear god. People are nuts about this game!

I played age of empires and command and conquer generals (never very good at either :p), but not for some time. I get the basic idea of RTS but there's probably going to be a pretty steep learning curve as I learn units and basic strategies. I'm excited though, there has to be a reason why everyone is losing their minds over this game.

Unsmart is right. teamliquid is a great place to learn stuff. I watched the livestreams of some of the players to learn some better strategies and such.

Most of my Asian friends didn't know what Starcraft was until I told them about it. Even then they don't play it :(

There are always tons of live streams going on at team liquid. Watching these can be good. I also suggest players pro or new to watch all their replays.

When watching a game question everything. Why did he do that, why did he not do that. You'll see stuff you wouldn't have done and realize, you should try that, it will make you better; or, that is something you should really avoid. Also, don't always watch just your favorite race. I play nothing but zerg, but I watch a lot of T and P. This way I can learn what kind of stuff they are always doing, learn the norms, and be able to expect and counter strategies better.

Now I'll be honest, I don't watch every replay I win, but I watch every replay I lose. You game will temporary save your last 5 or 10 games, after that you must do a real save. In every lose try what I do and find out why you lost. Was it something you didn't expect the opponent to do, was it a major blunder on your part, or was it just cheese / did they find a timing?

Biker has some great points there.
Right before I jumped on SC2 today I watched a couple of replays and saw a nice strat to try out.
I brought this into a 2v2 with victus and that strat was able to get us an early win.
If you feel like you are having problems in your build sometimes it is great to watch what the pros do and see how they handle situations.

If anyone has any good terran replays to recommend in particular please post. My biggest thing right now is learning what's good vs what.

Dan, I have some decent replays of myself for basic build order and such.
If you want some games with commentary you can check out HDStarcraft's youtube channel here:
