My first introduction to the Swedish scene was when I picked up a used copy of Swedish Assaulthttp://seeeingred.blogspot.com/2009/04/ ... ation.html(a comp album) at the now defunct Relapse Records retail store that was on South St. here in Philly. My favorite band on that album is Disfear which really isn't as much metal as it is crust(a form of metal influenced punk). Here's one of their more popular songs:
I also liked this song from Genocide Superstar a lot, it slightly reminds me of Motorhead as the vocals are very Lemmy-esqe(maybe only in my mind):
That first video is horrifying! For some reason my Mom thought it was OK to let me read Stephen King's It when I was in middle school and I've had a healthy fear of clowns ever since(I say it's a healthy fear because clowns are creepy regardless of whether or not they're actively trying to kill you. F*ck clowns)!
To me the second song/vid seems like a cross between Queen(vocals) and Iron Maiden(composition/guitar riffs). Very interesting.
I didn't know how to embed youtube vids when I started this thread but learned by quoting people that already embedded videos and looking at what they posted. Just copy the letters/numbers after the "=" from the video URL and then paste it in between the " tags that come up after you click the youtube button. Way simpler than the old method of URL modification.
I've been wracking my brain trying to think of some other great stuff, and came across this on my ipod. The vocals at the end give me the shivers.
(yay imbedded video!)
A little over half a year ago, I had never heard of Brocas Helm, until I got the game Brütal Legend. Besides being a pretty awesome game, IMHO, it has a decidedly awesome soundtrack of about 100 songs, give or take a few.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one
Yeah, I'm a retarded drunk when it comes to most of this crazy formatting stuff and although I might figure it out one day I'll forget all of what I've learned the next... Great post though, and glad to have you here on the ville where we can learn together!

I also strongly endorse this:
I had never heard of Brocas Helm ever until you posted it here. On the other hand I have heard of Brutal Legend but haven't gotton around to playing it yet(shame on me). This song is pretty kick ass and although the vocals didn't give me shivers, it has made me want to seek out more of their music and definitely made me want to buy and play Brutal Legend! Also I must say that Manowar is f*cking awesome! Thanks for the inspiration my good man! Also I noticed that you're relatively new to the ville, I hope you find your stay here a pleasant one and I welcome you wholeheartedly. Add me to your friend list on steam if you'd like to play some games(that goes for both of you) but unfortunately I'm currently working the night shift and am rarely on in the evenings except sometimes on Thursday nights...

Quite happy to spread the metal love around
As for Brutal Legend, I give the game my full endorsement with one caveat: There are RTS battles in it, which can be a surprise (if you're not expecting them) and a challenge.
Thanks for the inspiration my good man!
I would like to point out, though, that I'm a lady

I know there's a clever saying about assumptions but I'm the only one I've made an ass out of here. My apologies.
I also can't believe I forgot to include this great band in my posts. 80s doom out of Baltimore that most metal aficionados put up on a pedestal with Sabbath:
Well this topic is obviously dead, which saddens me, slightly. When I moved to Philly in 2001 I was 21 and my only experience with the metal genre of music was old(but great): Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Megadeth, and of coarse Metallica including a copy of the 12 song Kill em All LP on cassette that I had acquired from my cousin with that amazing Diamond Head cover of Am I Evil? I had way past shoulder length hair when I moved here from Michigan and apparently the east coast's metal scene is thriving as it was more than a few times that people asked me if I was into metal just based on my appearance. Anyway I'm sure nobody cares about my reminiscing here but the point to this drunken babbling is this:
One of those people that asked me if I was into metal was a kid about my same age named Rudy. He was a metal aficionado through and through and played amazingly on the drums. While he was living with me(we became roommates later) he was one of the founders of the band Otesanek and he's the person that turned me onto metal back in '01. Again I know this is a lot of rambling so here's one of their songs to break up this drunken thought stream that I'm on now:
Anyway his/their style of metal doesn't interest me much as I find this doomy sludgey slow paced music boring at best. But he turned me onto a lot of bands that receive regular play on my mp3 player as well as at home. I was hoping for more interest and posting of peoples favs from the ville but I see now that metal is lower on people's lists of interest here on the ville even though there's a few here that seem passionate about it. I just wanted to take the chance to post a few more vids of songs that I liked before this post is buried and is seen no more except by the archaeologist of the internet generation 100 years from now when we all lay as corpses and society tries to figure out what motivated us to an attempted self imposed genocide of the human race(/speculation/cynicism/obvious sarcasm/alcoholism(oh wait, you can't stop that with text). Anyway I see everyone is losing interest in this topic so I'll post a few more vids that few people will care to look at:
Anyway that's still from a comprehensive list of great metal. Just a short list of a few songs that I've enjoyed along the way. Maybe my next post about hiphop will be more poopular /sarcasm Although I'm sure my love of ska-core doesn't jive well with a lot of metal lovers and my one true love of late 80s/early 90s indie rock doesn't help either. In closing I think Metal is a great genre of music that many people overlook. And in this day and age of Lady Gaga poop infused pop I'm sure if I was young and dumb again I'd want ANY and I mean ANY subversion of the status quo. The major labels think their business model is collapsing because of piracy. I think they've got it all wrong. They aren't making money because their music and bands are crap. If you put out garbage how can you expect it to bring in any profits? Well if anyone actually made it this far I thank you for reading my ramblings and run on sentences. I'm sorry. That is all.
Melt Banana is a Japanese metal band that defies all classification. At heart they're a metal/hardcore band but they can't be classified beyond that, seriously. I own their "666" 6" on vinyl and seriously no joke I sometimes wonder if it's supposed to be payed @ 33rpm or 45rpm? Honestly it's a tough call but they're still a great band and I've yet to see a female lead singer with such a great stage presence besides maybe Elaine Doty from Chicago's pop-emo band: Nymb
Pretty sweet vid l3eeron! I forgot about Sepultura and that song does kick ass. I had an ex girlfriend that was really into them but I don't own any of their albums and hadn't listened to them at all within the last few years. Aren't they from Brazil or somewhere in South America?
Also Mastodon is great but unfortunately I've never had the pleasure of seeing them live. The time between when I first started listening to them and when they exploded in popularity was pretty short and I only really enjoy attending concerts that are at small venues as it's so much more amazing. That's awesome that you got to see them in an intimate setting!
