codec disappeared
So today I noticed that some of my video files (mpegs) would no longer render, throwing a message about an IV50 codec. The files rendered fine a few days ago. Now all I get is audio. What can I do, besides paying for a codec pack that I never needed in the past?

Try using system restore to take your PC back to the state it was in when they would play. If your media player supports transcoding, I'd suggest changing them to a more portable format.

This forum suggests that playing IV50 files may be difficult on modern operating systems. Additionally, VLC and related media players don't seem to support IV50.
You may want to try playing them on an older PC or in a Windows XP virtual machine. The codec was owned by Intel until being sold to Ligos Corporation. Ligos maintained them through Windows XP, but has let them stagnate since then.

MPC-HC still plays them, but WMP10 wont. Rolling back using system restore hasn't worked, either. I am still using XP, by the way.

Re: codec disappeared
This page http://ffmpeg.org/general.html#SEC6 states that FFMPEG can decode Indeo 5 video. If you wanted to transcode those files to Xvid or h.264, FFMPEG should be able to do it. I'd be happy to write the commands needed if that will solve your problem. I don't think I know of any way to get WMP to play the files without transcoding though.

Re: codec disappeared
VLC doesn't seem to support it from what I can tell. It is based on FFMPEG's core components so it may work now. It's worth a shot.
