Penn and Teller on Violent Videogames

Post by NoahTheBoa » Wed Aug 12, 2009 10:12 pm

From Penn and Tellers: BS. NSFW, there's a lot of language, but I thought this episode was interesting so I thought I'd share.

Yes, very very strong language, but a good watch nonetheless.

He is, and if you listen you'll hear Penn say he was a public interest lawyer.

He was still a lawyer for many years, which means he's likely got a fair amount of money, and you don't need a law degree to be crazy and hate video games. Being disbarred isn't going to stop his video game crusade.

I think we all know that violent games don't cause violence and I've heard a lot of good documentary/rants/books/etc against it but this is a good watch.

I've also been around guns while my uncles and father were hunting before, ya... not fun for me (I found out I was definitely a city guy then) don't blame that kid for crying especially since he was 9.

He has been disbarred by the Florida State Bar. Technically he was still permitted to practice law in the Southern District of Florida (federal court), but he was supposed to show cause by last week on why the federal district should not take the state ruling as grounds for federal disbarment. Not sure if they have ruled yet.

Edit: Regarding money, he really hasn't made much money as a lawyer, since he so rarely wins a case. So far as I have read, his wife is also an attorney, and that is where the money has been coming from.

Excellent episode. Thanks for posting.
I love graphical gibbige, yet i faint at the nearest sight of blood, lol.

Responsibility starts with the parents.

Man, as I'm watching this, I am getting so much rage atm.

So far the games i recognise are:

COD4
Brothers in arms: hell's highway.
Quake 4
F.E.A.R

I didn't see any valve games....
I also love the irony of the anti-FPS gun-nut.

I shot my first gun at the age of five (22LR). I started playing video games around the same time on Atari 2600 and NES. I haven't gone "postal" yet. If you ask me, violent video games are a good way to blow off some steam and unwind with your friends.

In my opinion the lawyers are just trying to shake down the video game companies for money. Lawyers always target the people with deep pockets.

Same. I've been shooting, and playing video games, since a young age and haven't shot anyone.
