I will never be a great combat medic, but I enjoy being a healing medic when I can trust my medic buddies. The problem is, good buddies are few and far between.
If I sense someone is not interested in protecting their medic, I'll usually ditch them. If I find there aren't at least two people on a team worth healing, I will switch classes as soon as I can. I think for nearly everyone it would be better to be a mediocre combat/support class than trying to primarily fight from the medic position.
Maybe this is a good time to remind people a few things about being a decent medic buddy.
#1. Defend the medic first. As long as the medics alive, you probably will be. Shoot the guy attacking your medic first, then focus on everyone else! If you have the ability to push people, push them away from the medic, then kill them!
#2. Don't ignore your medic. You should turn around and check your medic every 5-10 seconds in case you're getting ambushed, scouts, pyros and spies especially like to attack your medic and are capable of killing them very quickly.
#3. DONT TAKE THE HEALTH PACK. EVER. Even if the medic is not healing you at the moment, hit your call medic and wait your turn.
#4. If you want to get healed right now, HOLD STILL. It's hard to swap specific targets in a crowd of people running around different directions. If you hold still, I can focus on you quickly.
5. When you're not ubered - act as the shield! If you're kritz ubered still act as the shield!
6. Don't forget that ubers build more quickly if you're damaged, much more slowly if you're overhealed. Stick your head out (unless snipers are dominating), take some safe damage and come back!

I would say if the Medic is greatly injured, leave the health pack for him.
If the Medic is busy healing someone else who is fighting a bunch of people and you're low, don't bother the Medic by standing next to him and pressuring him into healing you by spamming Medic. He'll switch over to heal you and his buddy will die. This would be a good time to take the health pack. If the Medic isn't distracted by any enemies around, then letting him heal you would be nice, for ubercharge purposes.

I'm more than happy to heal players that put some effort into protecting their medic (unfortunately most don't - Jesus Faction does though). If a player makes no effort to protect their medic then they shouldn't be surprised when the medic suddenly stops healing them to defend himself (or die a painful death).

lol, dude. i give my life to save the medic and his uber

All I can say is that there's no right or wrong way of playing the game. Just like there are different styles of playing heavy, spy, soldier, etc. there are going to be different styles of playing medic. If some people (Like myself) enjoy playing combat medic, then so be it.
I've said this before, and I'll say it again - It's a game! Most people play it specifically to have fun!

A game where teamwork is a heavy factor. Quite often, the Medic will determine the outcome of an event, or even game.
If the Medic is running around not healing people, dying repeatedly when he has a full uber in an attempt to suicide charge a Demoman, or pockets someone the entire game, chances are, the team is not going to have very much fun and be very aggrivated at the poor performing Medic.
If people want to fight, they should probably play as a combat class. Nothing is more teasing than having a person on your team with a Medigun who never uses it. It's like standing ontop of a health pack while burning and it doesn't heal you.

i like to watch people die right infront of me if they piss me off and take my medkit

Ummm Medic that's what he is as far as your Idea of he spawns with his Needle gun or bratwurst or what ever it is this is because not all maps provide protection at Spawn and it is so the medic can defend him self at spawn and shortly after spawning
IE if you just woke up in a battle zone would you want a band aid in your hand or a .45?? You job is still to use the band aid but your safer waking up with the .45 in your hand

I am pretty reckless with my Medics, but only with people who know that's my style. There's usually a number of people I play will who will go Medic for me, since we both know I can do more damage if I've got the healing, or if I have that extra little health they give right before they die, we can take down the SG even if it kills us.
I will, however, always keep my Medic alive in non critical "gotta take out their location" times, and I usually lead Medics to medkits when they need them. I'd take a crit rocket to the face before stealing a Medic's health pack.

Perhaps saying NEVER EVER is a bit strong.
If you're aflame and going to die in a big group, take the medkit if you can.
You can always check the medic's health, if he's got pretty full health, take the medkit.
If he's a 3rd rate medic and focused only on keeping the heavy overhealed and never healing anyone else, take the medkit.
Otherwise, generally, please don't.

Re: The Misunderstood Medic
Everyone knows Medics were made for melee. They're fast, they hit hard and they regenerate their own health. Why do you think Valve gave them one of the best melee unlocks?
But serious businessly, I've seen Medic duos do some damage. If a Medic with good aim can do some serious damage. I always wondered how well a kritz'd Medic would do. I'm sure, if anything, it would be funny.

Re: The Misunderstood Medic
UBER ME!!!!!! Medic chain FTW
I think a kritz medic chain would work great in a melee only event but would otherwise end badly. A kritz on another medic wielding the blutsauger/syringe gun actually works reasonably well (I think my best is 3 kills that way). This should obviously only be done when an offensive class is still crawling back from spawn.

This thread has made the grievous error of equating Medic with SoltanMedic. They are two completely different classes requiring their own unique approaches and strategies.
