Unintended Consequences?
Valve really can do no right.
We complain when theres dozens of scouts/medics/pyros all messing up regular games trying to get achievements and nothing else. We complain because we actually have to play classes we don't like to try out a new weapon. We complain that people who never play OUR class are taking up our spot because they want an achievement.
Now its the opposite, its not a flood of scouts and spies ruining good pub games. We can still go for achievements at our leisure, but are rewarded weapons (how often and which ones we get is kind of suspect) for classes we dont play (to try out) even if we're having fun playing our primary class.
There's positives and negatives to both types of unlock systems.
What other methods could there be that are any better than the two Valve has experimented with. I'd have to assume theres some kind of middle ground we can reach. Unlocks via achievments is a bit too competative for me (I still haven't unlocked Bonk Juice and it took me months before I got hte KGB) yet being awarded items (and dupilicate items no less) over time played is a bit too casual.
I'm pretty sure Valve will get it right eventually.

it is a stupid system. I enjoyed playing the game and tracking whatever achievements I got and KNOWING I would eventually get a new item from playing this or that class. I just like to play to game. To bad they ruined it and basically made the achievements null and void. Achievements mean nothing now. Might as well take everyone of them away.

NOOOO dont do that...
I love the cheering when i get an achievement.
they should have made it so you get weapons based on achievements AND this new system[/quote]
They should just make it so you can pick the next item you get instead of having it being random, other then that the system is fine.
Now:
Me: Hey can I get a cloak and dagger?
Randombox: LOL MAYBE IT'S RANDOM
*2 hours later*
Randombox: LOL ANOTHER FLARE GUN, wow your unlucky that's the 5th one today.
Me: SCREW YOU RANDOMBOX!!!!!
What it should be:
Me: can I get a cloak and dagger?
NotRandomBox: Ok, I'll set the next drop to cloak and dagger
Me: Yea
Also trading would help:
Guardian has found the Ambassador
Me: Awww I already have one of these and I dislike it anyways
Shimmybot or someone who wants it: RRRRAWWWRRR GUARDIAN I HATE YOU, I WANT THAT GUN, GIVE IT TO ME...
Me: ...... I wish U would

And with that system, everybody in the TF2 community would have every single new weapon within 48 hours of the update.
No.

That's how it was originally. They were just a fun addition to the game. They don't need to have any meaning.

Just making all the weapons available to everyone would probably work.

I still think the weapons need some unlock system instead of just having all the weapons when they come out. It's a nice feeling when you go "Oh! I finally got the _____!".
It's like the Meet the Class videos, if Valve just made them all and released them all at once, it'd be over and done with. But they excite you by releasing it gradually.

Re: Unintended Consequences?
the whole idea behind this was to stop farming for weapons. I think valve was quite successful in this endeavor.
