Someone Once Told Me

Post by regis » Mon Feb 26, 2007 1:29 pm

But I forgot...

what's the difference, if any, between dvd+r and dvd-r???

[EDIT] All I want to do is make back up DVDs of some files, programs and whatnot that are on an external hard drive. I should've done this a while ago, but I've been reluctant to get some blank media to put it all on.

With the +/- I really want to get which ever one has the best quality/reliability. For the make of them I'd have to go with TDK, as that's the brand of DVD burner I own. I've tried a different brand of discs but it always rejects them for some reason.

I think there is one, but it's only a slight difference.

Didn't read it, but the best thing to know is:

If the + and - are the same price, get the +.
They work better with a greater variety of options (which I am sure the link goes into great detail about)

[Sorry - I don't like to read a lot, corporate world executive summary stuff for the win]

Ole Stut got it.. It all boils down to what your drive can handle. Most new DVD
drives can do both + or -, so it really don't matter. I do a lot of DVD movie burning,
so I prefer DVD+. They cost the same, but I find more older home DVD players are +
compatable than -. For backup purposes though, either will work as well. You can
get some really good bargins. I've paid as little as 15$ for 100 disks, Sony
I can get for around 19-25 range when on sale. Verbatim I consider the best. :)

The main thing you need to know (Taken from one of the sites stutter posted)

"DVD+R is a dvd disc that allows multiple layers for one disc where as dvd-r only allows one layer. They will not compete to become the de Facto standard, because they are both here to stay. Multi layer DVD+R can allow extra capacity per disc than DVD-R hence its high cost!"
