Computer Power-On Problem

Post by Rockman » Wed Feb 14, 2007 7:56 pm

My computer has suddenly become hard to start. When I press the power button, it begins to start -- the fan comes on, lights, beeps, then goes dead. If I repeat it enough times it finally will go.

Any suggestions?

I had that happen to me. Ultimatley I got a new computer, but the little micro switch under the actual button was shorting out. Prolly from pressing the button hard. I would say thats the culpret, or maybe a failing power supply???

Yup...could be a bunch of things.
As Stutter says, just one beep? The beeps matter!

Yep, don't sound good. Unplug all your components off the motherboard,
if you have more than 1 stick of memory, pull off all but one, making sure
it's in the single stick position. . With the power supply turned on, short out
the power up pins and see if the cpu fan comes on and stays on. if not,
swap out the one stick of memory for another, try it again.
If still not, swap out the power supply. If still not, either cpu or motherboard bad,
or defective bios.

If at any of these times the cpu fan stays on, power off, plug in one item at a time,
starting with the monitor. If monitor works, look for error listing when the system
posts (single beep, good. Sometimes two beep will still post showing the error)
Next, plug in the hard drive and see if it will boot.

Myself, this would be an excellent time (excuse) to upgrade the MB, CPU, etc..

I think that is the solution to your problem, especially if you presently cannot run Source.

Usually means mboard or p.s. is dying. I have had both. If it is an N-Force 3 chipset, I would say mboard. Had two die, with the same symptom. You may get it to turn on eventually, but soon enough, it will never boot again. It could be the switch, but I doubt it.

In addition to what Bull posted you could try memory in another slot. Sometimes 1 slot on a motherboard goes bad and people think it's the memory.

Beeps mean it's a piece of hardware. Also, depending on the manufacturer there could be indicator lights as well.
