Wrath of the Lich King

Post by MauryPovich » Sat Oct 11, 2008 3:57 pm

Any current or former wow players going to pick up the expansion pack when it comes out?

I haven't played wow since the beginning of the year, but I might pick it up just to level to 80 with my old guild and check out some of the instances. I really have no interest in doing 25 daily quests or grinding for raid mats anymore. I prefer tf2 where I can hop on for and hour and then not play for a few days and not have to worry about playing catch up with the folks that play 10 hours a day.

So, anyone in the beta? How is it? Worth getting?

TF2 has no depth, don't play it.

See, Mr. S, no fun when the shoe is on the other foot. Remember, respect the other players is part of TheVille and like it or not there are TheVille players who play WoW. so respect, please.

As for the original question, my wife and I already have it preordered. Neither of us are in the beta though.

The game is no more addictive than any of a thousand other activities people get addicted to. People have addictions. One should look to the person, not the activity, for the problem.

Meh Wow was fun while it lasted. The ONE MAIN downside of the game was that your had to pay to waste your time on it. Best part was the 40 man raids it was real team work. Unlike the 10 mans. Old school Mc and Bwl were cool.

I kicked the WoW habit back in May, that's why I started up TF2 in June and joined theVille in July. Although I will say, TF2 is just as addicting, it's just not that much of socially suicidable topic, not to mention I've found TF2 much more fun and fast paced. WoW was fun up until 60, I hated Outlands and the best part of the game was before they screwed over Paladins.

I played WoW until one day I realized it wasn't fun anymore, I was just playing for the tiny tiny incremental improvement in my equipment. I am not sure it had ever actually been fun, but I certainly played over 50 hours a week for quite a while. . .

The social aspect of the game is what makes it fun. If you find a good guild it can be a ton of fun to clear dungeons, pvp, etc. That would be the only reason I would get it, to level up again and see the new stuff. I did the hardcore 5 nights a week raiding and I just don't want to devote that much time to a game anymore.

I think new expansion packs are fun, it's after 5-6 months when Blizz starts adding more grinds in to keep people playing that gets me bored. I hate doing dailies, grinding mats for crafting, etc. I only managed to get one character and epic flyer, other than that I'm usually poor in the gold dept(raid mats and repairs get expensive).

I would say I was pretty addicted to it, but I think I've kicked it. I've activated my account a few times in the last several months and couldn't play more than an hour or so. I used to like pvp at 60, but hate it now. But I do like the smaller raids.

Anyway, just wanted to see if it was worth getting. I might just to check it out. Northrend sounds fun, plus changing the hair style on my ugly troll mage will rock.

Was fun, until it turned into a Virtual Treadmill. Having played it since Beta i can safely say i won't be getting lich king. Too many hours spent trying to just get pieces of gear which are made useless with almost every patch or upgrade. I'll stay with games like TF2 and such, to each there own.

I have it pre-ordered. Why? I'm not really sure yet. I've pretty much kicked my wow habit. But I figured I'll check out the new expansion when it comes out.

Oh god, that game deserves none of my respect. I have clocked in a huge amount of hours in that game (I am talking massive here). Wrath of the Lich King will be the same thing as Burning Crusade. If I pick up this game, I can kiss my business degree goodbye. I have written a long spiel about it. It can take over your life. It did take mine for awhile. The guild drama, the corruption, the loot squabbles... uggh. It is still too painful for me.

and oh greyed.. there are thousands of people who have had their lives shattered by this game

I came very close. This is straight up like a gambling addiction. This isn't like other games, there is something special about it.

I looked at that site and shook my head at those people. As I said before, the problem is with the people, not the game. If it weren't for WoW they would (and probably are) "addicted" to some other activity. The behavior is a symptom of a much deeper issue at work. Blaming the symptom, focusing on the symptom, does nothing to resolve the issue.

Besides, most of the posts i saw there are just general rants against the game. Frankly anything that is as wildly popular as WoW is will garner a good portion of negative backlash for no other reason than its popularity. Witness the vitriol often spewed against popular TV shows, musical acts, movies and so on.

Finally, it anyone honestly thinks its the game and not the people I submit the following two facts to you:

1: With millions of players worldwide the fact that there are only "thousands" of people with a problem means that the vast majority of people, well over 95%, don't have a problem. It would be hard to find an activity which doesn't have its share of people who are engrossed to the point of "addiction" in such a small ratio. For example...

2: http://theville.hlstatsx.com/?mode=players&game=tf Most of the people in the top 50 have more time in on TheVille than I do on most of my WoW characters. Considering I've been playing WoW longer than TF2 has been out much less these stats gathered would you say that these people are addicted to TF2 because of the inordinate amount of time they are putting into this server? If you cannot see the stat I am talking about it would be "Time". What that is measuring is the amount of time played if the player were sitting at his computer playing 24/7 with no breaks.

So, for example, my time is 5d 07:22:53h. that means 5 days of 24/7 play. No breaks, no meals, nothing. Yours is 17d 21:19:51h. For comparison I think my average character in WoW sits at the 10 day mark. Granted I have multiple characters so my total time is probably higher. But like I said, been playing that game for several years now.

Point is that if people are ragging on WoW because some members of the community are spending quite a bit of time playing the game them they should apply the same standard to TF2 since it is clear since the playtime here is in excess of many WoW players play time.

Or they could admit they have a bias against the game, for whatever reason, and that the problem is with people and not the activlity.
