*&@$( Microsoft

Post by BlackHawk » Sun Aug 10, 2008 11:48 pm

So today I finally broke down and installed XP SP3. Once again I get screwed because of my stupidity. I should have just left my computer alone. I got done with the install, rebooted...and it loaded with no problem. Computer worked great. So I go to dinner, come back (out a whole 5 minutes) and AVG has gone crazy because suddenly there is multiple trojans on my computer. I ran a full scan yesterday and my system was clean. Since then I have only visisted the Ville and MSN News, along with installing SP3. I am always using those two sites with out problem, so what do you guys think, a bit of a security hole in SP3?

Well, I followed the instructions to remove Antivirus XP 2008, and it fought back by forcing my computer to restart and modifying my computer to automatically log me out even in safe mode, so I can not get into my computer to even do a system restore (Which I tried first, but was corrupoted by the maleware) This thing is nasty. And since I don't have a floppy drive I can not use it to make a boot disk, so my ancient copy of XP will not see my SATA hard drives, so I can not even format and reinstall. I have a $1,500 paper wait at the moment.

Well, my computer is almost back up and running. I had to break down and get a copy of Vista from my dad (He buys a copy through work for every family memeber). It is installing right now. I am hoping that once I get in I can run AVG and save my XP installation.

Antivirus XP is an intrusive "anti-virus" program that uses scare tactics to get you to pay money to have the so-called viruses it finds cleaned with their full version.

Well, my PC is a giant paper weight now too. I canceled the install of SP3 and I got a BSOD. Good think I was planning on a fresh install of XP anyway.....

I installed SP3 on one of my two systems. It now works fine. The anti-virus program mentioned is not part of the service pack.

However, if you have an HP computer be forewarned of a serious bug. AMD-based HP systems often have a registry flaw that causes the SP3 installer to install an intel-processor specific driver. Once installed on the system you will get BSOD on any boot (i.e. safe mode doesn't work either). It requires booting into the console mode (or using an Ubuntu CD) and deleting/renaming the file.

I havn't installed SP3 yet, and I got it to boot into windows. However, a process "avgrsx.exe" is eating up all my CPU and is causing my computer to be SLOW. I'm not sure if this is really associated with AVG or what, but I'm having some major issues at this moment.

That's the thing, its slowing down like its scanning, but its not. Apparently it only does it during the first five minutes of window's booting up. Once I get to desktop, it takes a few minutes for everything to 'ease' up. I've never had this problem before.

Last night I went ahead and upgraded to SP3. So far so good. But I'm still getting the slow down on startup.

edit: Ya know...I'm starting to wonder if my CPU is going out...it is 3 years old...
