Some help to get Source running....

Post by Dog » Wed Dec 27, 2006 11:59 pm

Is my computer powerful enough?
You need at least 512Mb RAM, a decent graphics card (important) and a decent CPU (minimum of 2.0GHz). It can be run on a P4 1.3GHz, 256Mb RAM and a 32Mb GeForce but it's crap and jerky!
If you are using Integrated graphics cards, then you will have issues because the CPU is also running the graphics too. Better getting a card that can be installed. Check your machine and see if it can take AGP, PCI or PCI-Express graphics cards.

My FPS are really low
Often people never tweak Source to get the best settings.
In the console, type net_graph 3 and see what FPS you are getting. Less than 15 is unbearable! 20 - 30 is playable. 50 - 70fps is perfect.

Go to Options>Video and lower resolution if it helps. It may not. Some cards are actually faster running higher resolutions....go figure...!

Go to Options>Video>Advanced and you will see a bunch of settings that Source recommends for your card (highlighted with a star).
However, you can increase FPS by playing with the settings:
1. Set everything to low (Model detail, Texture detail, Shading detail)
2. Set water to Simple reflections
3. Set Shadow to low
4. Antialiasing: None
5. Filter: Bilinear
6. Wait: disabled
7: HDR: None

Also, in the launch options of Source: Steam>Games>DoD:S>[right click]>Properties>Launch Options,
put in -dxlevel 81 to lower DirextX. You can even try -dxlevel 70.
You can also play with heapsize if you have a lot of RAM (>1Gb): Steam>Games>DoD:S>[right click]>Properties>Launch Options, put in -heapsize 512000

There are also a bunch of other settings that some people use that you edit in the config.cfg (located in C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\YOURNAME\day of defeat source\dod\cfg). But this makes the game just plain ugly! Also, they may be regarded them as hacks/exploits...
I'll post them, but use them at your own risk! If you want to get back to the way it was, then delete the config.cfg file and Source will create a new one for you.

Update graphics card drivers, update DirectX and you may need to update sound card drivers especially if it's a Soundblaster.
Check this http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin ... _topview=1

Other tweaks
Fed up with the dude with Valve video? Turn him off by adding -novid to launch options (see above). means you don't have to wait for the game to load!

If you had lots of forum points you could win the vid card im giving away

http://www.theville.org/viewtopic.php?t ... c&&start=0

you might wanna start a fund (points) raiser. "The help me not suck so bad at this game points charity foundation" Ask around, Im sure lots of people would donate their points to you.

But, everything SDog posted ^^^ is exactly how you handle FPS problems. So if you dont get the video card from my auction, you still have things to try out before the card is deemed unworthy.

You get points by starting and replying to topics here at the ville.org forums. Here's a link to the auction. There's a link to check the specs on the card...

I think it was Blown65 that wanted to donate 4000 points to someone who wanted to bid but didnt have any points.

The higher the FPS the better. When your frame rates get to low you get lag. :(

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.26GHz
Memory: 512MB RAM
Hard Drive: 120 GB
Video Card: RADEON X800 PRO
Sound Card: C-Media Wave Device
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519)

ok, this is my setup (i think) so please give ideas. I reset everything like dog suggested, but now it doesn't look quite as fancy as before???

If your fps are greater than 30, then don't touch a thing!
This guide was only for people who were having issues getting their game to run on a low end graphics card. Your X800 should be powerful enough.

If you want to return the fanciness (and your card should be OK with it), go back to Options>Video>Advanced and set everything back to recommended (the little star).

Just keep HDR off as it is very annoying (IMHO)

We are talking about source right...?
I Have a Radeon 9200 at the beginning it was working fine but with the updates that DOD:S did it completely got me off now my FPS runs in the 20 and 30. Iget to play but when i die my screen goes black and i cant see nothing no more. I can hear the game but i cant play. Is there something i can do, or I just need a new Video Card...?

Erm.....are you, by chance, playing on TV1?
There is a Realism Mod on it so that when you die, your screen goes black.....

Or does it go black and then stay black and you have to close the game?

The fancy pictures are called signatures (at the bottom) or avatars (at the side).
You can make any picture you want (below 350kb) and go to your profile and add the picture...
