Happy birthday by the way.
Have you clicked the mic or audio option in the control panel (click start, then control panel). There might be something turned down or off and there should be a test option so you can see how it's working. There should also be an option to choose what default device to use. See if there is anything that might be limiting your audio. Also check to see if there is any switches on the mic itself.
Godd luck.

People keep saying that it sounds like I have a fast zombie in the room, or that it sounds like farting
Any ideas?

It would suck, but it might be just a plain old crappy mic.
Have you researched the make and/or model number to see if anyone else has posted anything about your specific mic?[/quote]

What sound card are you using ? I had a heck of a time with my onboard audio. Stupid MS Windows Update kept DOWNGRADING the driver and breaking the MIC input.
What computer / motherboard do you have if you are using the onboard audio ?

Re: mic problems
I've seen reviews on some of the SB cards having a weak mic input. That might be what it is.
