Maybe it's a hardware problem.

Some computer keyboards have an F-lock key that must be pushed before the F keys will work properly; check to see if you have one.

That's screaming of Bad Memory or a failing power supply...
Memtest.org is your friend. Start there - download their memory test CD and do a full test of the memory.
After that, check the voltages on your motherboard in the bios.
Also, run a "smart" scan of your hard drives.

Memtest doesn't ever stop. You just let it go as long as you can and see if it finds any errors. Usually it will find errors by test #6 or so, but you can let it run longer. Just reboot the PC when you are satisfied.
EDIT: It will list the errors at the bottom of the screen if it finds any. They are tough to overlook.
