Roman Numerals

Post by Dog » Wed Jun 25, 2008 12:05 pm

:rofl:

I've had people ask me what the I, the V and X mean at the end of the Ville servers.

So, to help them understand this:

I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1000

Use a combination of letters to form numbers:

* II = 2
* III = 3

* V = 5
* VI = 6
* VII = 7
* VIII = 8

* X = 10
* XI = 11
* XXXII = 32

* LIII = 53
* DCLVII = 657

If a smaller number is before a larger number, you subtract it, so

* IV = 4
* XLIII = 43
* CMLXXVIII = 978
* MCMLXV = 1965
* MCMXCIX = 1999

The number to the left has to be the nearest smallest number so for example, 999 cannot be IM, but is actually CMXCIX

So for the Ville server:

I = 1
II = 2
III = 3
IV = 4
V = 5
VI = 6
VII = 7
VIII = 8
IX = 9
X = 10
XI = 11
XII = 12

Hope this helps.

That's what I thought O_o;;

Oh well. Now you can understand why the arabic numerical system was adopted rather than the roman one :lol: I know the roman system, but it's far more confusing!

Wow, I remember when you only had to know up to V to play here, then we went up to VIII, now XII

Schools arent teaching much now a days. Heck the joke with my little inner circle of friends whenever theres a question that someone doesnt know the answer to we reply with... "Dont ask me, I went to public school"

As for the roman numerals, I know them well enough but I'd still have to think about it b4 I blurt out the answer.

Is XII for the AoA server? Also, what type of game is art of ascension anyway? I've never heard of it.

Apparently it's some kinda fantacy-RPG type thing. My first thought was it was Morrowind/Oblivion-like. I downloaded it, but I havn't actually intstalled it... perhaps I should do that. Then I could give a bit more of a complete and accurate answer.

But it's nifty to see that I'm not the only person to notice that strange game to appear on the left sidebar. =D

I was thrown off by the fact that there wasn't a forum section for the game. Is it purchaseable via steam or is it some sort of mod?

You'll notice there are only four servers on the planet running it.
We're number 1!

I wouldnt say that, they have advanced knowledge courses when you start kindergarden and from what I have heard (since I cant compare :P ) school has gotten harder and they probably have reasons for not teaching roman numerals (even though I was taught them) they arent used as much as much as regualar numbers (once again Zman points out the obvious) :oops:

The ville and old movies are the only places I see roman numeral anymore, now that you mention it.
