FINALLY!!!! a single core card to top the 8800 Ultra

Post by MrBlah » Wed Jun 18, 2008 9:43 am

nVidia has released its GTX 200 series GPUs and finally, a single core GPU that can top an 8800 Ultra.

Both the GTX 260 and GTX 280 are beasts with in themselves, they may even see better than a 9800 GX2.

NVIDIA's site for em

EVGA's plans for em

now with EVGA's editions of em... i got kcik out of one they call the FTW edition... and yes that means " For The Win Edition"

As for price? I've seen the GTX 280 start at $650 and only go up from there, the FTW edition is $700 and already sold out at newegg. The liquid cooled version... $930CAD at NCIX and sold out at TigerDirect.

Chance Im getting one? none :)

Now obviously the all important question is will it run Crysis on all highest settings... that answer is still no.

Im waiting to see if the 4870 is competitive with it.

But at 255 watts I wonder how many degrees it would raise the temperature in a 12x12 foot room...

It seems like these cards are coming out too fast now. I've been thinking about upgrading my 7900gtx to something newer but I'm not sure what I want to get yet.

MasterChef, If i was you, i would either one wait a bit longer and let the 9800 GX2 drop, or just get an 8800 GT or GTS (G92)

Thats what I was thinking about doing. We'll see, I don't really need to upgrade. I'd just like to upgrade.

my 8800 Ultras in SLI raised the temp a good 5 degrees and more an awful lot during the school year.

Oh cool, thanks for sharing Blah :)

I'll be getting a second 8800GTS before I upgrade to something else.

I'm waiting for the tomshardware review on 'em before I trust them :-) Probably pretty darn good, but with the 9800's being so comparable to the 8800's, I may just take the inevitable price-drop on the 8800 and slap in a couple of those :-)

So you all would recommend 2 8800ultras over the XFX black edition 9800 gx2? and either of these over the new 280's?

I am going to upgrade my SLIed 8600 soon. I am willing to spend, but i don't want to spend 100 bucks more if i am only gaining 3fps with a higher end card.

After reading that latest review provided above....

Yes
and either of these over the new 280's?
Dual 8800 Ultras against a single 280, maybe, if you've got the power to spare. Dual 8800 Ultras against Dual 280's, heck no. A 9800 gx2, against a single 280 perhaps, A 9800 gx2 against dual 280's no way, except in terms of cost.

I am going to upgrade my SLIed 8600 soon. I am willing to spend, but i don't want to spend 100 bucks more if i am only gaining 3fps with a higher end card.
Tom's actually recommends getting the 260's, not the 280's. $250 cheaper, not all that much slower, and still better than the 8800, and sometimes the others. Dual 260's would rock.

IIRC the gx2 costs about the same as the 280, and performs about the same, and two of them are roughly the same as two 280s.

Anand did a nice writeup on it, and tweaktown did one too.
