I got the free version and I don't have any problems. I don't need all the firewall stuff. However, it did automatically scan and delete some important archives I have for some reason. I just disabled the option for removing unwanted files. :?

I have noticed that AVG's scanning engine tends to have a higher false positive rate than most other anti-virus scanners. That being said, they do have a higher detection rate than some others... *cough* CA *cough cough*.

I'd try uninstalling AVG 8.0, and seeing if Steam will work then, if not, use Windows System Restore to load a restore point from a few days ago. If it still won't work, you may need to reinstall Windows. Just be sure that there isn't anything else that could be causing this problem. With computers, coincidences are common.

...I don't think so, but XP/Vista should have it's own firewall. Or get ZoneAlarm it's free as well, and not that bad.
