An Opportunity To Make Some Quick Summer Cash
Re: An Opportunity To Make Some Quick Summer Cash
My puppy is totally owning my TF2 time at the moment. I have to take her to the dog run every night or else she wont let me sleep at night. I have to go to sleep at 11 so I can get up at 6 AM to walkher.

I used to be an EverQuest addict back in the day - had over 5000 hours to my name. I was in school the first time, and managed to tear myself away sophomore year and stay away until I graduated, when I made the direct correlation between my playing time and my grades.
The day after I graduated, it was back on my system, and I played for another 6 months or so before I was able to do the final uninstall. I gave away, sold, or destroyed most of my equipment to make returning less tempting. I still have a wicked urge to play again sometimes - only the pain-in-the-neck reinstall process (that many expansions is a LOT of downloading - I only have discs for like 4 of them) stops me. The account is still there - it's flagged lifetime free, since I worked for them, so even my lack of payment doesn't get rid of it.
I'm very much a gaming junky - I swing through phases of playing continuously, broken by spurts of not playing at all because I'm angry with myself at spending so much time online, followed by playing again when I realize I don't have enough of a life elsewhere to keep me away. Every time I've successfully stayed away for a long period, it's been because I had something else in my life that I cared about. In college, theater 40-60 hours a week on top of my other classes, for example. A girl who didn't like gaming. Some sort of other fixation (Alizée, perhaps?). If you can find some other activity you enjoy, especially one with a set schedule you can't put off, it'll do wonders to help you cope.

The problem happens to be when that other activity is also a computer game.
I've swung from Half-Life: The Specialists (3 years) to World of Warcraft (1.5 years) to TF2 (0.5 years). Ya'know, spending somewhere around 8-12 hours a day dedicated to that particular game. It's all well and good to get over TF2, but you've accomplished nothing if you just spread that addiction over another title.
If you think TF2 is interfering with your life, make sure you make your coping activity something you feel is more productive. Just shifting it between bad addictions won't help a bit.

In response to Alizée, that's my main problem. There's really nothing going on right now for me. I've got a summer job, but it's crap and it's only part-time for now.
But otherwise, it's summer, there's hardly any of my friends (that i can put up with) around, crappy weather, and generally not much else to do cept fire up the ol' steam account and giv'er...
Still, when school year starts up again, I'll probably be cutting back....i hope...
Good luck with the 'rehab' Fleshwound, may you have better luck than some of those poor souls on wowdetox.com

You could always try doing something absurd like self study over the summer or reading up on some philosophy. It's never a waste to increase your knowledge. But if you don't have the interest or the motivation for that and think you're on the verge of addiction, just mix things up a bit. Get a few other games you like as much as TF2 and put them all into rotation. When you have three or four games you have equal playtime on, I'd imagine it would be easier to break playing them than if you had a single title you played non-stop. That's all theory, of course, but you've at least managed to pull yourself away from one particular game while you indulged in the others.

Re: An Opportunity To Make Some Quick Summer Cash
For me, the issue is not so much TF2 itself, just gaming preoccupying all of my free time. When I say all, I almost literally mean all. I do have a demanding, full-time job. So you can imagine that there's not much besides work, TF2, and sleep for me when I'm able to have accumulated 15 days play time since the last server reset. I just feel that my time would be much more wisely spent working on personal projects, reading, and just developing myself into a more well-rounded person instead of indulging my addictive nature in a very repetitive environment such as gaming. Hell, even spending more time at the card room taking money off wealthy LA types would be more productive (from a personal, and wealth distribution standpoint).
Thankfully, TF2 is the only game causing me an issue at this point. I too was an EverQuest junkie in its hey day, and its pull was significantly stronger. For those others who have admitted they spend too many hours playing TF2, or another game, I'd urge that we all try to find a more productive use for some of that time. Let's see.. who wants to learn Swedish with me?
