6ms LCD good enough for gaming?

Post by l3eeron » Wed Jun 20, 2007 12:45 am

About a year I go a picked up one of the best GPUs money can buy. Now Im ready to purchase an HD monitor. My 7950gx2 is geared to run at 2500x1600 which equals a 30" inch screen  All the HL2 games/mods are written to run in this HD resolution. Right now it runs on my ancient 21" CRT 1200x1600. Dont get me wrong the CRT looks great, but I want the HD monitor. So, my question is...

Apparently the best respose time a 30" LCD has is 6ms.

Is that gonna ghost on me? Id rather wait for the 30 inchers to have a better response time, if it is.

Do any of you have a monitor with 6ms? Does it ever ghost on you?

I was looking at the 30" Dell makes but the 12ms scares me

Squirrel and I bought our lcd's at the same time and they work great. Like you say though definitely get one that refreshes at 6ms or better.

Anything under 8 ms is good, the lower the better. For FPS games though, I wouldn't get any higher than 6ms. Same thing if you plan on watching fast action movies or sports on your monitor.

6ms would be fine! 12ms would surely be playable... but you might notice a little ghosting if any.

A 30" monitor is pretty tall, so when gaming, depending on how far you are away from your monitor you might have to tilt your head up to see the rest of the monitor, and that is bad for gaming. And if you are too far away you might not be able to read small text. So if you are going to get such a big monitor, make sure you make a cardboard cutout of the dimensions just to get a feel for it.

For gaming, I think you should stick with 2x 24" monitors, as they have much lower response times. And they are shorter. You would have a resolution of 3800x1200 with two 24"ers.

But all in all, it's really up to you. Goodluck shopping.

I think mine is like 12ms, fastest speeds at the time. I see no ghosting with it.

FWIW, two reviews on the Dell 3007wfp didn't mention ghosting as a problem with games.

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1 ... 756,00.asp
Video playback looked pretty good, although some digital video showed slight scaling artifacts. We saw no evidence of streaking or ghosting during gameplay or watching DVD movies. The PC Magazine synthetic test, which moves a colored box around the screen at high speed, only showed tearing near corners, but the overall artifacting was minimal.

Razor-sharp text and images are complemented by excellent moving-image performance, from fast-paced games to DVDs. We saw no evidence of smearing or ghosting throughout a long weekend of testing.

I dont think I could handle a line right down the center of my field of view... maybe I just dont understand how that could work. Half your cross hairs on the left monitor and half on the right??? I gotta be missin something here lol

If Im gonna dump money into an HD monitor I want the full 2560x1600, which is what my card and fav game (DoDS) is meant to run at to showcase its full potential.

Ill let you guys know what I decide.

Pretty sure Im going with this one, or something similar

Samsung Syncmaster 305T 30" 2560x1600, 1000:1 contrast, 6ms response widescreen monitor =)...
Its only $1,400.00 - excuse me while I choke

http://www.samsung.com/Products/Monitor ... BCBXAA.asp

But, its the best 30" I can find

OBTW just to clear up any response time confusion:

Response time is the time it takes a pixel to go from one color to an other. Usually Response time is measured going from completely white to completely black. Which is easy for the monitor to accomplish. Its like your gas pedal, pedal to the metal or nothing. Its easy for the monitor to calculate for those colors. THEN theres a measurement for colors in between. This is called Grey to Grey or the GTG response time. This (for us gamers with all the intricate shading) is far more important than black/white response times. Thats why you'll see different response times reported for the same monitor.

So... if youre looking for a monitor make sure your GTG response time is around 6ms (8ms or lower)

I have a 30 inch HD moniter and I just tilt it up and I dont get those problems I just love my big screen

Zman, You didn't quote right... I think this was your message

"I have a 30 inch HD moniter and I just tilt it up and I dont get those problems I just love my big screen "

Make sure your message is below the quotes.

Beeron, If you had two monitors you could play on just one.. But I guess that's not what you want to.

Just make sure you have seen it in person before you buy.

I noticed a couple of LCDs, like the HannsG 22 inch, only go up to 60Hz vertical refresh rate. Although 5ms is fast it still looks like mush at that rate. 70Hz - 85Hz is a good range.

It does on this Rosewill 20". At 60Hz it looks like a diaper full of diarrhea, at 80Hz it looks sharp, especially when I do a quick pan across the map to look for bad guys.
