Compression Utilities

I'm looking for a compression utility compatible with Windows XP that supports multiple compression formats. Ease of use would be nice but I'm not averse to learning a good, but complex, application.

Whether they are for sale or free, what utilities can you suggest?

winzip is a little old to be mentioned as well...

what is used for macs Mr. Gator?

I use... I think its called IRZArc. Someone reccomended it to me ages ago, little freeware program that can compress/uncompress in pretty much every filetype ever. I don't know where you could find it though.

As others have suggested, WinRAR is an excellent program. It's very popular, and supports several formats, as well as having password features.

Another program that's sometimes used with it is HJSplit. HJSplit isn't a compressor, but rather it allows you to chop a single large file in to chunks for uploading or emailing, which can then be rebuilt on the other side by another person with the program.

Both are free.

OS X has built in zip file compression/decompression utility similar to Windows, which is good enough for me most times.

There's UnRarX for decompressing rar files. I don't usually have to deal with other compression formats, but I'm sure there's utilities available for the more common compression formats.

ALZip is another good one I know of. It also has a good command line interface.
