TF2 Minimizing to desktop

Post by KRG » Mon Feb 18, 2008 3:38 pm

Running XP and the only program I have running while in game is Norton. TF2 will occasionally minimize to desktop, still running. I can get right back in game, but it's annoying.

Anyone else have this problem?
I have a butt and you do too. Let's be friends.

Does it happen when you are joining a map?
If so, when you begin joining, don't move your mouse until the MOTD appears.

try running the game in windowed mode and move the window accordingly to get the best screen converage. This also makes running the game much easier when multi-tasking so you can alt-tab quicker.

All the things listed above are viable solutions. The new versions or the "premium" versions of norton have built in firewalls (so does windows), quick view popups for updates, registry changes, and automaticly scheduled tasks, and a port blocker (The box that comes up when you send information through the internet via a program the "Allow program to run" "Do not allow program to run" box that pops up.

SO, turn off ALL automatic scheduled operations norton has, a good PC user automaticly updates their PC every week manually.
Turn off Automatic notifications. (not automatic virus detection)
Turn off the Windows firewall, and if you have one of a few versions of norton that has a firewall, disable that also.
Disable any memory scanning/boosting - This throws off the majority of games off that use memory to load game files.

Basicly the only thing you want norton to do is sit their like a good little program untill you actually get a virus, or you want to scan for viruses.

If that doesn't fix your problems CTRL + ALT + DEL and screen shot all of the information in the "Processes" tab. Also, list what operating system you're using. Do the screen shot when you have "Only norton running" The list should be relitively short if you're not using Vista... even if you are I should be able to tell if you have somthing running that could conflict.

Edit: I use vista and love it - Don't be afraid to admit it if you use it too. - Anyone who thinks vista sucks doesn't know half a lick about computers! Rawr!

This acutally happens to me and whats happening is Norton thinks it's more important than TF2 and instead of overlaying it's minimizing TF2 so you can see it. Anyways open up task manager when you load TF2 open up the processes tab, right click on hl2.exe and set it's priority to high, now your computer KNOWS TF2 is more important.

Macfee does the same thing - I'll need to try your fix of setting HL2 to HIGH.
