Add in SATA Controller opinions
I have at least 1 faulty built in SATA port. So I am thinking that rest of them can't be long for this world. I can't afford to replace the computer or the motherboard. I thought of purchasing a add in SATA controller card. By doing this I can upgrade to SATA 3.0 Gb/s (SATA II) and bypass the faulty/failing built in controller. I was thinking something like this:

I welcome any comments and feed back any of you may have.
Thanks in advance.

It's inexpensive which is good, but only has 2 SATA ports on it, which to me, would be limiting. For that price point tho, I can't find anything better.

You might also consider this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6816132014
It has the same 2 internal SATA II ports, but also has two eSATA ports (as well as a spare ATA 133 for some reason).
Least expensive internal quad is $40, though has free shipping:

Re: Add in SATA Controller opinions
Two ports is enough. Although if I could get 2 external or 4 internals for the same price.... I only have the one SATA drive. It is a older machine. I am slowly bit by bit replacing failing parts and upgrading this and that to keep it alive until I can afford to replace it.
Pretty strong feelings against Rosewill. It has an ok rating from NewEgg. Nothing to write home about.

I don't blame you for not liking Rosewill - I don't use them either, but I didn't want my personal bias to affect it... I also don't use AMD or ATI, which I know are perfectly respectable
The total cost on the one you linked is $33, $27 + $6 for the shipping. The four-port one by the same manafacturer (that I linked above) is a total of $40, as it has free shipping. I don't know if the $7 makes a difference, but it if you're able, it's a small price to double the available ports.

Re: Add in SATA Controller opinions
Alizee Fan, I had all but pulled trigger on purchasing the one you suggested when I looked at the interface. It says PCI-X but that certainly won't fit in my PCI-X 1x slot. And I will not be sacrificing my graphics card's PCI-12X slot for this (I think that is right. Can't remember right now is that is correct or not. Brain Fried I guess.) Can you figure out what PCI-X interface that is? I couldn't. At least not right now.

Re: Add in SATA Controller opinions
Ewww - sorry to have linked that. I haven't seen a PCI-X card in ages, didn't even both to consider that aspect of it.
PCI-X is a somewhat obscure extended version of the old PCI slots, and is nowhere near as effective as PCIe. Shame on me.
Looks like it's tough to make a 4 port SATA card that can function through a PCIe 1x slot. Cheapest one is 120 bucks.

Re: Add in SATA Controller opinions
Hm, I have a few Hosewill things. Wireless kb/mouse combo (one dongle... heh, dongle....), and a KVM switch. They haven't given me any issues, but they aren't major components either. I also have a Rosewill router which....... has had a few minor issues, but overall, its done pretty well. As far as I have heard/read, they are okay, with pretty good support. That said, the router's 'few minor issues' may be more than another brand would have, so yeah.... I don't really know where I am going with this anymore....metacide wrote:That's a Rosewill.
