Is it time to wipe TV5 and start a new map?

Yes, it's been enough time and version updates for this map.

Is it time to wipe TV5?

Post by Calculon000 » Tue Dec 04, 2012 1:39 pm

Over the past few weeks, there has been a spat of character inventory wipes, and a trend of noticibly worsening lag on the server. Taco has suggested that this is a result of the same map being played during the introduction of so many new versions of the game, and to me, this makes sense. When I view the server on my server list, or log in, it lately almost always has zero players online or very few, intermittently.

This server started it's current map over a year ago, before villagers existed. Jungle biomes, pumpkin pie, iron golems, even upside down stairs all post-date the current map of TV5. I didn't want to admit this earlier, as I was hoping to finish Mushroom City, but having recently played on the Spaceribs server over the past week, I now realise how stale and devoid of excitement play on TV5 has become.

There will always be holdouts, someone, somewhere working on a project as any given time. My own project, Mushroom City, has consumed hundred of hours of my life and is still not nearly complete, so understand I do not suggest this lightly.

I of course make no demands of the Admin, Dog. I am fine with either the server staying or wiping. I just wanted to get what the mood of the TV5 community is with this poll.

Should Dog decide to wipe however, I do have a suggestion for the new seed, as he may already be aware.

I miss the rush of the first few days of a new map; the exploration, the building of a new home and the project possibilities.

Is there still enough interest? I never see more than 3 or 4 people on during peak hours.

Probably because the map has gone stale for a group of people.

On one hand, I, like you, have put a ton of time and effort into my creations, especially the theme park and the skyscraper at spawn, plus my music-disc-farming operation. I'd really hate to lose those.

On the other hand, I agree that the map is rather stale, and it would be fun to make a rush for new land and start a new project. Ever since TV10 was taken down I've been kind of itching to build another mountain castle similar to the one I had on there, but bigger, with courtyards and such. There just isn't an optimal location that I've found on the current TV5 map for such a project.

I think I would be okay with a map reset, but if I may, I'd like to submit a personal request to hold off on it for a week or two. My classes finish this Friday, but I have a major project that I need to spend the weekend on still. I'd very much like to be able to be there when the server gets a fresh start, as well as participate in Destruction Day. Plus I'd like to take some time to enjoy what I've built a little more before it goes down. I know I'm just one random person, but that would be my preference if it matters. :)

My thoughts exactly. I'd even be supportive of introducing a mod or two if they were stable.

I got cranky when I lost a bunch of stuff a while back and haven't been back since.

I'd be interested in a new map.

All maps are archived so peoples' projects never truly go away.

It would be up to dog obviously, but what are some of the mods that you (and others!) would suggest?

I suggest, if there is a map reset, to wait till the 11th for this. Cause the 10th is my final exam day and I can jump in with you guys right from the start.
Why do I say this, cause whenever I did jump in there was so much cool stuff I never knew where to start up my own place.

(no vote has been cast cause I don't play on the server, reason above)

Yeah, I am totally down for a reset. I know it will bring out everyone for what will surly be one of the greatest destruction days the minecraft server has ever seen (though I think this would be its second since we got rid of TV10 :P ) as well as the mad exploration that comes with a new map. And like T says, the maps are archived and made available for DL, so nothing is truly lost (even though it does lose the SMP aspect). I also think that the issues plaguing the server would warrant a clean slate wipe sooner rather than later. But whatever ya do Dog, we support you :D

Of course! I'm NOT suggesting full Tekkit, as that's like 20+ mods of questionable combined stability to say the least, but off the top of my head, perhapse something like pipes w/ Redstone Power (The electric mod that is not the one that uses rubber and loses power if you use a wire longer than 4 feet. I can't quite remeber ber which one that is.), and maybe the mining turtle mod. No quarries though.

My sentiments exactly. I'm not telling you how to run your server at all, Dog. :)

Since the return of the Tekkit server, I don't have a finger in this pie, and will refrain from filing an official vote. I'll support whatever decision is made :-)
