So you want challenge, but while still being entitled to near-infinite supplies with mob harvesters? Make up your mind!

There's a reason why the main mode of multiplayer in this game is called Survival MultiPlayer (SMP) - survival is the main focus of the game, and in the future it's going to be the survival and adventure aspects that are going to gain the most attention, as that is what entices players back to the game. Right now, a decent chunk of people aren't playing anymore and waiting for there to be actual things to do in the game aside from building things. If they ignore that demographic, they're going to lose a large chunk of playerbase. For people who build, they're reinventing Creative, but as a general rule everything you need to build stuff is already in the game, and no more additions need to be done. Mob grinders right now do pose a big threat for adventure because you can get near-infinite arrows from them, which would make adventuring considerably easier.

The decision to make it so you need to kill them is honestly a smart one, and bear in mind that it also leads to more interesting opportunities with bosses down the road - if killing something via lava or causing them to fall makes it so that you don't get the loot, that would mean you need to put in serious effort to make sure you land the final blow on an enemy.

tl;dr - Adventuring is a larger demographic of players, so game changes will be decided in favour of those people as opposed to builders.

What I don't understand is how people who think it's a good idea to get rid of spawners believe that they in any way hurt the game. If you don't approve of them, fine, don't use them. You are now playing exactly the same game you would if they didn't exist.

For those of us who do use them, we use them, and we still get to have fun playing a game with others, which has the challenges of mobs, life, food, etc. Our ability to do so does not affect you in any way, so why are you trying to tell us we shouldn't be allowed to do this?

Adding new content does broaden the demographic appeal, while removing content narrows the demographic appeal. There is no need to remove this content, as it has absolutely zero effect on anybody who doesn't want to use it. None. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

With some of the design decisions currently in the game and some of the proposed ones, it makes me wonder what type of multiplayer format Notch/Mohjong designers come from or play on. Case in point proposing doing away with mob grinders as a solution harvesting experience orbs. A second case in point being weather; does anyone, when they see rain go, "Oh cool, its raining in game!" or do we most go, "When will this damn rain stop?".

It seems like anyone who has spent any time on a stock SMP server without heavy mods or admin interventions would realize some of these design impacts are mostly negative.

Don't get me wrong, I love Minecraft but it seems like there is a fundamental disconnect between some of the decision making and player experience.

Addressing the other issue, forcing SMP to become MINECRAFT ULTIMATE NO BUILD ADVENTURE MULTIPLAYER is not a good idea. The joy of MC is the sum of its parts; limiting or separating those into different modes will only weaken the experience, split the playerbase and highlight how broken the combat mechanics are.

Constantly building in Snow Biomes I have never really noticed the rain too much, I do love it when it snows though, reminds me of home.

I always thought rain was cool, but not the darkness that comes with it.

The light slider in 1.8 will fix that though.
