Is it time to wipe TV5?

For the denizens of the Minecraft servers

Is it time to wipe TV5 and start a new map?

Yes, it's been enough time and version updates for this map.

With JD moving his PC time will be limited so anyone who can spread the word on TV5 would be appreciated.

Also, heres a good use for Will Ts bulletin board at spawn :)

I have an interest in the results of this poll, but Dog is very wise when he says that the people who put time and effort into the current map should decide its fate.

Right, but I wish there was some kind of happy medium between vanilla and the complete overhaul that Tekkit makes of the game. The Equivelant Exchange chests feel like cheating, and the quarries kind of feel too easy.

Plus it makes for more interesting landscapes, with huge Extreme Hills mountain ranges and sprawling plains and deserts without a taiga in sight to disrupt them.
As for the new map, I propose the following seed;
"or do we?"
which is the same as -645223687.

This is a map of the seed generated with Amidst, scaled to the current TV5 map

I love this seed, and would love for it to be the new TV5 map. It's continents are relatively realistic, especially for a Minecraft map.

Hey! I got a crazy idea.

Why not....make our own map!

http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/231 ... generator/

Why don't we let people take a whack at making a world. We put a vote to all the choices, then choice the most picked.
Just thinking out of the box a bit.

How much does knowing the result of the seed in advance dampen the thrill of exploration?

No objection to a wipe here, though I'd definitely feel bad for those who've poured so much time into the current incarnation.

This.

Why would anybody want to know what the world looks like in advance?

I've heard of people doing that for single player maps, mostly so they could test out an idea that only works in certain set-ups, or see a cool/rare feature, but never in MP. So much of early MC is exploration, and quite a few of the folks here have mentioned the early rush of exploration as one of their favorite things - I can't think of any colonization type game where you know the layout of the world in advance - it just doesn't seem... interesting.

I should probably shut up, since as I've said earlier, I probably won't be active here, but let's keep it Vanilla. Plain vanilla.

Consider me thirding the notion that a pre-determined seed holds zero interest.

When the reset happens, it will be unmodded. There are many reasons for this, but the main one is that when Mojang brings out an update, we want the server to be playable immediately. Mods have a lag time where they make the server unplayable, often for days.

As for the seed...JD, Flash and I will go on TS3, make a new map, join the server, check it out and then redo it if necessary (for example spawn is in the middle of the ocean). Repeat until we get a nice spawn area. I don't know how many times I've created maps where you spawn under water or on the side of a cliff.

Something important to bear in mind with all this (And why I'm staying out of this), while a lot of people like the initial thrill of a new server and what-not, I imagine odds are pretty good that after a couple of weeks it's going to be back down to the core 3-4 players on the server again. For that reason, I think a poll isn't necessarily indicative of what the core Minecraft people want.

I'm not going to vote whether or not the map should be wiped because I don't have any stake in the outcome.

However, when the map does end up getting wiped I propose having scheduled wipes. Just for sake of example... every six months. It can be adjusted slightly on a case by case basis if a major update is being released around the time of a wipe.

This cuts strongly toward more resets then, if a lot of players lose interest, why would we want to maintain a server for the enjoyment of 3-4 people when we could keep the interest of more players by resetting more often?

I recognize we have folks who play that aren't frequent forum goers and I don't think their preferences should be steamrolled - but I would humbly remind that we think of ourselves as a community and the interests of the community should be our primary consideration.

I like biscuits idea - scheduled resets might be a very good thing - allowing the necessary resets for file size and server management, keeping interest and newness without having to worry about people not being ready for it.

I see your guys' point about not knowing the map ahead of time. I was thinking, for a scheduled wipe, 12-18 months. It allows enough time for people like me with full-time jobs to work on really big projects.

If we were resetting on a regular basis, I think that would drive away some of the few MC regulars we do have (myself included). When I play MC, I want to work on and maintain big projects, not rush to find a spot to build a simple dwelling before the next reset. Part of the fun of that land-grab is to settle down on the land you've claimed and turn it into something. Otherwise you're just looking for a nice-looking spot, saying "It'd be cool to build something here," and scrapping the map to do it again.
