2-Way Nether Portals
Ok, so there's a lot of Nether portals that are 1-way. When you exit the nether you don't come out where you went in. This is because portals in the Overworld will connect to the nearest portal that already exists in the Nether. But there is a solution!
While in the Overworld, stand near your portal and press F3. You're looking for your X and Z coordinates. For example, my portal is at x:-1491, z:-1251 in the Overworld. Divide those by 8, and you will get your target coordinates in the Nether.
With my example above, my target in the Nether was about x:-186, z:-156. Build a portal while in the Nether at your target location (height does not matter), and it will form a 2-way connection to your Overworld portal.
As a side note, the direction you are facing is preserved through Portals. So if you are facing North when you enter, you will be facing North when you arrive in the Nether.

I suppose that would make sense as to why my portal comes out into the Failroad station, but I thought I was a lot farther away from there than that.

This is hard to be cool and suave while being informative at the same time. Goddamn my coolness.
In my experience, common sense isn't too common.

Once we get settled in, lets get rid of some of these extra portals that don't go anywhere. Also, try to mark portals with signs to ease some confusion in this chaos.

That may not nessicarily be true, i've got a one-way portal that leads back to civilization from my place.metacide wrote:I guess this means shortcuts through the nether will not be feasible then?

Re: 2-Way Nether Portals
This is just my opinion, but I think it would be lame to impose "portal laws."
Basically keeping people from making random portals in the Nether.
I've made three portals so far in the Nether, one went to an area right next to Toby's farm.
Another one went to a cave me and Mateo went through. It was a massive cave. We were in there for a good 30 minutes, and it never ended.
We just eventually started to run into other people's cave systems so we stopped.
The third one, I admit, was pointless. Went to some grassy area with water all around.
I just see it as a fun new way of exploring.
But I will start putting signs on my portals; saying I made this, and where I think it goes.

Re: 2-Way Nether Portals
Maybe we can extinguish random exploring portals after we are done with them and simply relight them as needed? This probably wont affect me since I am so far out, but I can see it being a problem for people close to spawn who are attempting to use portals for transportation, only to find some random portal that only gets used a few times for exploring doubling up with their egress/ingress into the nether.Bronze Fox wrote:This is just my opinion, but I think it would be lame to impose "portal laws."

Re: 2-Way Nether Portals
My portal is a specific 2-way portal, working only from my basement in the Overworld, to a small room inside a mountain in the Nether. It has several signs, and to get to it at all, you have to travel through around 100 meters of hallways inside a subterrainian tower complex I've constructed. That one shouldn't cause any problem.
I don't think that we need to worry about a "portal law," but remember it is doubly lame to simply create random portals all over and leave them there. At least put up signs and pathing information. Hopefully nobody ventures out so unprepared they think they have to build a portal randomly just to escape - the place is tough, but not that tough.
