Internet Browsers

Post by regis » Mon Jun 30, 2008 7:40 pm

So for the past couple of days I've been playing around with Opera.... and it doesn't seem that bad of a browser. Images load up very clearly. Performance seems about on-par with that of Firefox.

Speaking of which I upgraded that to v3.0. Haven't noticed much outside of aesthetics.

What are my fellow Villuns thoughts?

PS. I will never touch Safari

Really? I find FireFox 3 to be markedly faster than before.

Safari, at least on my mac, is FAST.

I don't know what they did with I think version 3, but it's the fastest by far.

I use Firefox on my mac lappie and on any Windows machine in the house. Haven't upgraded to 3 yet that I know of (it might have done it by itself and I wasn't paying attention).

I have used Opera from time to time, and even gave Camino a try, but I mostly use Safari until something doesn't work on some web form or something somewhere, then I switch to Firefox.

Huh? Firefox 3 is humongously faster and renders the page much better.
Safari, at least on my mac, is FAST.
Also, I cheated in that claim a little. When I FIRST got Safari 3, it was super fast. As I said, I have not consciously tried FF3, and I don't use Safari on Windows, so I have no comparison data there.

You caught me :P

The only browser I actively avoid is IE, and I have to use it at work, so whattaya gonna do? At least with 7, they finally have tabs.

Someone was telling me about tabs in IE7 and I said, "Yeah, they finally caught up with other browsers three year old versions"

Does safari have anti-phishing features yet? Last time I looked it was the only "mainstream" browser lacking them.

Hm, maybe I am behind the times; anti-phishing?

Do you mean like website authentication? I always avoid phishing scams at the email level.

I did find this article: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/06 ... uilds.html

From 2006.

I think that, at least on Mac, Safari still enjoys 'under the radar' status. It's just not popular enough to be fun to write viruses, &c. for.

I have ... five internet connected computers in the house, and have had at least two for the last five years or so. thankfully, we have never had a virus or phishing or other malicious attack. Of course, we keep the kids on a very tight leash, and Mrs. SU is also very computer savvy, so we have been fortunate.

I just tried to download/install FireFox 3, and after installation, it keeps crashing...

Both FF3 and Safari 3 have big speed improvements.

Firefox:
http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Fi ... developers
Performance

* Reliability. Firefox 3 now stores bookmarks, history, cookies, and preferences in a transactionally secure database format. This means your data is protected against loss even if your system crashes.
* Speed. Firefox 3 has gotten a performance boost by completely replacing the part of the software that handles drawing to your screen, as well as to how page layout work is handled.
* Memory use reduced. Firefox 3 is more memory efficient than ever, with over 300 memory "leak" bugs fixed and new features to help automatically locate and dispose of leaked memory blocks.
Safari
http://webkit.org/blog/122/webkit-3-10-new-things/
3. Faster Page Loading

[boilerplate followed by iBench numbers]

WebKit 2 - 2.95 sec
WebKit 3 - 2.06 sec
WebKit 3 is 1.4 times as fast!

9. Reduced Memory Use

[Boilerplate stuff again, followed by iBench numbers]

WebKit 2 - 26.7M RPRVT memory
WebKit 3 - 23M RPRVT memory
WebKit 3 uses 14% less memory!

Improving memory use will remain an important focus for future releases.
