Web Page

Post by So Uncivilized » Thu Mar 20, 2008 5:55 pm

I built a few web pages myself back in the dark ages (HTML 4, anyone?), and even made one with some CSS built in.

My wife is now asking me to make her a web page. I know that I have to get a domain name and someone to host it, but are there any groovy tools out there that are cheap or free to design the pages, or are there any services you recommend that maybe host and provide some kind of reasonable content management?

what do you want to do with the page? just a personal one? if buying a domain, i would go to godaddy.com but stay away from them for hosting. i would look for something with php and mysql. most paid hosting these days include all that stuff, even just the $5 a month ones. i would look for hosting that includes cpanel. sometimes host will include 'fantastico' with cpanel that has a bunch of preinstalled stuff you can use like blogs, forums, content management, etc. some hosting also offer free tools as well. ill post of companies i recommend later on when i have some more time.

with php and mysql you could setup someting like a blog. wordpress is quite a popular one. example of a site that uses wordpress: http://www.hamandjam.org/

if you need any help setting that stuff up, i can walk you through it, i have my own webserver and do this stuff in my sleep.

Wow, thanks, Archon, for the info and the offer. I actually did a tiny tiny bit of work with php and mysql once upon a time. Still have the books, in fact...

It's for my wife's photography business, so she wants to be able to allow people to view slideshows of her work and stuff like that. She already has a wordpress blog that she uses for personal stuff, and there is a lot of crossover.

I don't think that she intends to add any blogging to the site, probably just external links to what she already has. I don't even think she wants to do any kind of online shop or cart stuff.

I guess that's pretty simple. My problem is always how to present a slideshow without breaking the bank on flash or something like that...

I didn't realize that was what she wanted until she just told me...

there is probably some simple (and advanced) .scripts you can google to make slidshows. of course you could also throw a bunch of <img> tags into a <marquee> tag for a simple slideshow.

i use coppermine gallery myself, tho i dont know if it has the slideshow feature your wife is looking for (has a "slideshow viewer" but i have not used it) http://coppermine-gallery.net/index.php

this one has a slideshow, though it requires some code modification http://www.dalbum.org/
