I have an "extra" pc pretty much unused. I have WS FTP pro from IP Switch. Itd be cool if I could use it for ftp stuff. I've tried to set it up myself, I just cant get it. Anyone want to help me? I got lots of forum points to spend
If I ever get it set up, Im gonna pack up all the popular maps and host em there (along with any personal stuff I may want)
XP (Pro) and Vista (All except the Home variants i think) have IIS 5/6 on them so you could just enable the FTP server in that, by no means a beast of a system but would do light usage without any problems. I've used it myself for some stuff, never had any problems with it and is really easy to setup
@ Gator: Well, wsftp pro not being able to run a server makes sense. Thats why I couldnt find any "hosting" options lol
@ English Oatcake : XP Pro, sounds like exactly what Im looking for... light traffic, easy set up. Im on an "enhance" cable connection which is supposed to give a little more upload bandwidth.
@ JD: I know where to get all that info, and I know enough to deal with firewalls and my own network
Ill look into the windows xp ftp stuff, thanx guys!
Looks like I can see it, I tried connecting to that IP. Obviously it fails since I don't know any valid login.
Forward port 21 (for some reason my Netgear shows 20-21 with their FTP menu choice, so you might need both ports) from your router to that computer.
FTP uses both ports during each session. It establishes a connection on 21 (by default) and then will connect via another specified port, which by default is 20. It is almost like send and receive channels.
l3eeron, I was able to login to the server, but there is nothing worth taking so I used it to host/move porn.
I would disable the anonymous feature rather quickly. If you leave it open I would guess that in less than a week you will have some interesting things on your server. I know that when I was setting up FTP sites on Windows Server 2000, by default the guest account was not disabled and it would allow warez people to store their files until I noticed it. I have collected some good, and not so good, music and movies over the years because of warez people getting on my FTP sites. I even collected most of the Sega Genesis games and emulators for my Mame cabinet from a warez guy putting it on my FTP server. May not happen as quickly since it is not MS, but you never know.
