I've been looking around for the past few weeks at laptops. It will be used mostly for productivity; like programming in Visual Basic, C++, some HTML and probably some Photoshop/GIMP. It's not going to be a gaming machine so it won't need to be really high end.
I was wondering which companies have some well made/decently priced notebooks. I was poking around Dell and IBM/Lenovo's sites customizing... I would really like to spend less than $1000(USD).

[EDIT] I would like the notebook to be nice and light/portable. My last once wasn't fun to carry around Boston.

Re: Laptop
For the price range you are wanting to spend. Look at a Gateway, Toshiba, Sony or HP from a bestbuy type store.
I picked up a Dual Core 1.6 with a 17" monior, 1GB ram 100gb hardrive for like $650.
Granted it has the Intel Integrated Card, but I got mine for work and other stuff besides gaming. But I can run WOW on it with little issues.

I have a Dell XPS m1710. I use it for word processing only.
NOT!
I use it for main work (audio productuion and design), secondary work (graphics - video editing), and gaming. THIS THING FLIES! I have 1gb of RAM in it too, but its expandable to 4gb. The only thing I hate about laptops in general is the small HDD's.
I would recommend getting the absolute best you can afford (this doesnt necessarily mean the most expensive out of all you look at). But, I think you should reconsider only spending 1000 on a laptop... a decent one would surely cost more.

THIS IS MY SIGNATURE. THERE ARE MANY LIKE IT, BUT THIS ONE IS MINE.
A main thing is that dont get anything bigger than a 14.3" screen. Anything bigger is just a pain to haul around. I have a Sony Vaio that is 14.3" and it is both light, portable, and gets great battery life, about 3 hours if I have it on full brightness and over 5 when I have it on the dimmest screen setting.
My last one was a 15" HP. Good laptop, but it was big, it was heavy, and the battery would last a max of 2 to 2 hours 15 mins on the dimmest setting. You could upgrade the battery to a 12 cell, but it costs $180 extra and it sticks out the back of the laptop, so its not the best thing in the world. (Even then max battery life was 4 hours) So in terms of mobility go with a smaller screen, and 14" is great for editing pics and stuff like that, heck I even shoot you all on this thing
