Print Servers

Post by Greebo » Thu Feb 15, 2007 12:16 am

Hey all

Well I sorted my router problem but now I'm no a quest for print servers.

I need 2. One will definitely have to be wireless though if both are that'd be ok too. One will need to be able to take 2 usb printers, the other will take a single printer which can be either a usb or a parallel port.

I can do research but I'm looking to see if you guys have any experience with such things.

What kind of printers you have might affect my answer too. HP printers work nice with HP JetDirect stuff, but most now have it built in.

For wireless printing I have alwaysed used the Linksys Print Server, that paticular model will handle both USB and Parallel together. That really doesn't help since you need 2 USB together.

I could not find a wireless print server with two USB's, however, three seperate ps's is always an option. In the past I have used parallel ps's with multiple connections, but I haven't seen any for a few years, plus I am not sure if I have ever run across a multiple USB ps. I'm sure you know, but copmuters work as ps's too.... if there is one nearby.

Yeah I did know that computers can be print servers, and in fact we may just do that, I guess I'll have to ask how often people intend on using the printers. I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world if they had to go turn on the relevent computer to use the printer.

Thanks for the link though - 3 PS's wouldn't be the end of the world if we did go that way.

In our place, all the printers have built in network cards. We have about 15 printers, all networked. They have their own print servers built in. The only ones that have a computer as a ps are the inkjets....

As another route, you might want to see if your printers can be networked....A lot of the HP lasers can be done this way and some of the high end Epsons...
