I think i found a solution Clay.... doing some research on the 9850 i looked for what mobo was used in the benchmarks...
MSI K9A2 Platinum

Take a look at that... thats probably what you should get.

Among further research, you will also need a heatsink as no cooling device is included with the Phenom 9850, This Zalman will do fine.

You also said u wanted a not so flashy case, here ya go: A solid Lian-Li case

It will ultimately make the room a smidgen darker really :D allows light to get trapped inside the case with its side panel window :P

Sorry for late responses, im not at home this weekend.

according to http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductRe ... 6813130136 the shipping bios version of that msi board wont boot with a phenom, and I don't really feel like buying an extra x2 just to flash the bios.

I wonder how the dfi boards are. my current LANPARTY UT NF590 SLI-M2R/G works fine, but wont support phenoms.

alright...done some more readin and such. Ive found people using these two mobos succesfully with the Phenom 9850, ive heard nothing about updating BIOS or anything so im assuming its native support with shipped BIOS.

GIGABYTE GA-MA790FX
DFI LP UT 790FX-M2R

Hope that helps Clay

I was planning on harvesting her netburst celeron box for the floppy, and its pata hard drive.

I do need to purchase a dvd drive for her, and find a heatsink that will handle the 125W load the 9850 will put on it.

Clay I'd love to hear how much you can stably OC this. Haven't found much on the net that is solid of this processors OC potential.

I've heard it does 2.6 easy, 2.8 possibly (may have to overvolt).

I don't plan on OCing it though, as it's going to be my girlfriend's computer, and it will be replacing a netburst celeron with intel EXTREEM graphics, so her socks will be blown off even if it doesnt beat a penryn with a 9800.
I still need to figure out what the heck heatsink will cope with 125 Watts TDP, as the power draw is so much that it kills 4-phase PWM mobos (I went with an 8-phase mobo). My thermalright si-128 probably wouldn't be able to cope. I think I would need an ultra-120 at the least, or maybe even an ifx-14.

Crap. Now I need to find out if an ifx-14 + the included ifx-10 will fit in the lianli case...

It should Clay, and btw, During all my research earlier today, i found out someone has stabley OC'ed a 9850 to 3.5GHz on both of those boards that i posted.

Clay, you shouldnt have a problem with anything fittin inside that Lian-Li.

As for the cooler, do your best to find an IFX-14
