Problems with my new build. 3dmark scores inside.

Post by tru.dat » Mon May 05, 2008 1:58 pm

Hey villains i just put together this new computer.

Gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l motherboard
Intel E2180 2.0ghz
Corsair 2gig pc 6400
Seagate sata Hd
EVGA 9600gt superclocked

3DMark Score - 5027 3DMarks
CPU Score - 978
SM 2.0 Score - 2206
SM 3.0 Score - 2736

So my problem is that when i play tf2 I only get 30-40fps. Ive reinstalled my gfx drivers a few times, and still hasn't solved the problem.

I went into Add/Remove hardware and noticed a yellow question mark next to SM Bus controller. I installed that with some drivers from my motherboards website. That didn't help anything either.

I just ran 3dmark06 and was shocked that my cpu was getting 0fps during the cpu stress tests. My video card... as expected was only getting 30fps during the tests.
BTW im playing @ 1280x1040res.

So guys, let me hear what you think the problem could be. I know this system can do better.

If you want to contact me directly, AIM = mikeydotnet.

You should be getting ample fps at that res with that system. My system is about the same as yours (cpu and mobo might be a bit better) and I run 2560x1600 full everything and it caps out at 60 fps with the vsync enabled.

Is your CPU over heating? Check that the heat sink is functioning properly and that it is seated on there with the the thermal paste etc.

Only reason I say that is, mine was doing weird stuff too until I redid the heat sink. Then everything worked great.

...maybe it's not overheating enough to shutdown, but enough to effect performance.

Beeron, your system is a lot better than his, 8800GTS 512 is a lot better than any 9600GT.

Tru.dat, you also have a low end CPU as well. on thopse CPU tests, i have a e6700 overclocked to 3.2GHz and i only 0-2 fps during that, thats what should be expected.

as for playing TF2, do you have everything on high settings? try turning some down a bit.

Try running it at lower res... if it smooths out that means you don't have enough horse power to run 1280x1040...

I just realized... try 1280x800. 1280x1024 is an odd size. I could be wrong tho, maybe your monitor is supposed to run that res? I remember reading something some where that said to try to run your monitor in it's native resolution (you should find that out). You might be having a problem having to scale to that res. A native res doesn't require scaling so it runs better.... I think?! lol

Which program over at 3dmark do I want? Ive never ran it on my system, I'm curious.

I run it at 1280x960 (its a 4:3 ratio, as I use a CRT). My 5200+ and gts640 (not that much better than a 9600gt sadly), and i get just under 10k total points in 3dmark06 in winxp. Your cpu might be bottlenecking you.

Try getting the latest drivers straight from Intel. According to Newegg.com you have a P35 chipset.

http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-026488.htm

Motherboard manufacturers are notorious for having terrible drivers. Also, get the latest drivers from Nvidia's website, not the card manufacturer. Lastly, if this fails, try turning down the resolution or settings. If you still get bad results it's probably a deeper issue; bad hardware, improper cooling, or corrupt drivers somewhere. Oh, and also get the latest updates from Microsoft for Windows. Good luck, let us know if this helps at all.

you can see it was a CPU bottleneck then.

It is a setting in the BIOS that was set incorrectly. It has everything to do with the speed that the processor is set to run at.

It was running at 6* multiplier when it should of been at 10*

2000Mhz/10multiplier=200

6*200=1200
10*200=2000

It was only running at 1.2GHZ when it is supposed to run at 2.0GHZ.
