New video card...cant launch any source game

Post by Spotty » Mon Nov 19, 2007 11:38 am

I just got a new video card (9800 Pro All in Wonder)
When I try and launch a source game...DoD or CS:S it loads the valve screen and then right before it goes to the menu screen, my screen flickers on and off, and then the screen exits and I'm back on my desktop...but the hl2.exe process is still running....what gives?!

First question is, do you have the latest drivers for you card. If you don't issues like this happen.

Are you upgrading from an on-board video card? It sounds like the computer is still trying to run the onboard.

Go into bios and tell it to NOT use the onboard

If hl2.exe is still running, go to the task manger and click Applications, Click the HL2 one and click maximize. See if that does anything, if it doesnt....

Try updating your drivers.

Or you can try adding -dxlevel 81 to the startup line for the games you are trying to launch. To do this go to your game list in steam, right click the game, click properties, click Set Launch Options, put -dxlevel 81 there and click ok.

That and in options make sure you have things set right in your video settings. Jr. has ther same card and we had to adjust everything to low.

Did you remember to uninstall the video drivers of your old card before you installed the new card and its drivers?

Good point.

Try drivercleaner to remove the old drivers completely.
