Netbook or Notebook
Netbook or Notebook
Need a quick bit of advice.
So the power supply on my laptop just died (literally - 10 minutes ago). It's over 5 years old and is starting to show it a little. The bearings on the fan are totally shot (causing some distressing sounds on occasion), the battery life span is pretty dismal and all in all, it's a pretty sad puppy. Its one saving grace was that the region coding was set to the UK which meant I could a) watch british DVDs and b) could rip said DVDs so that others could watch em too.
It's not my main machine at all, I tend to use it for some work stuff more than anything these days, mainly photoshop (we get our site designs from designers in photoshop), and programming - I had fedora 12 and windows xp installed.
So now I'm faced with either buying a power supply (not entirely cheap and would likely extend the life of the machine maybe another year at most before the fan totally gives out), or biting the bullet and getting a new machine.
Right now I'm thinking of a new machine, but am not sure whether or not to get a netbook or notebook. For a long time I thought my next portable compy would be a netbook, but notebooks are definitely becoming comparable, especially with battery life. Plus they usually have DVD drives which is pretty nice.
So what would y'all recommend? A netbook (likely with external dvd drive) or notebook?
Battery life is a big plus in general and no gaming requires are needed out of a machine.

notebook, but not a "gaming" one. Just get one with enough power to watch videos. A netbook, especially one w/o an optical drive, will likely not be what you want. And if you have large hands a netbook will be maddening.

If you're going to use photoshop I wouldn't get a netbook. I run photoshop on a 13 inch Macbook with a 2.2 Ghz Core 2 Duo pretty well, the bottleneck is ram, you'll want 4 gigs.

Notebook, probably something like this Thinkpad Edge might work well if you're looking for something in the 14"/5 lb range.

Definitely a notebook. For your purposes, I recommend a Lenovo Thinkpad, or something from Toshiba if you can get it without the bloatware.

Thanks folks - notebooks definitely look like the way to go.
Now I gotta visit best buy to field test a few and see what they're like. (Don't worry, won't be buying from them - made that expensive mistake when I first got to this country :-p)

If you end up choosing something from Lenovo, send me a PM, I can check to see what discounts I have with them.

A netbook can play starcraft and Futurama and use Microsoft Office and actually has a legitimate keyboard.
Also, Greebo, get a laptop. 13" laptops are nice as they are portable and yet capable.
